Transferring domain name to my new site
-
Hey everyone,
I have recently built a new website using WordPress.org and would like to transfer my chosen domain name from my old WordPress.com site to the new one.
The domain name in question is ‘agentpublicity.com’ which is currently still pointing to my old site.
My new website was built using a temporary domain ‘3ac.0f7.myftpupload.com’.
I have made 3 attempts to transfer the ‘agentpublicity’ domain name with the help of GoDaddy’s tech support, but am still unable to successfully make the switch.
‘agentpublicity.com’ has now successfully been made my primary domain for the ‘new’ site but the link still points to the old one. Also, my most recent attempt has now made me unable to access my new website through WP Admin which is concerning.
GoDaddy’s online help chat responded with the following..
“Upon checking your domain, your new site is not pointing to the IP adds of your Manage WordPress. You have to point the domain to the correct IP adds. To change the IP adds you have to do that where the domain nameservers is pointing.
You will see that your NS or nameserves is pointing to wordpress.comAnd the rules in changing the IP adds is you have to do that where your domain nameservers is pointing, and since your nameservers is pointing to wordpress you have to do that on their end”
I am at a loss on how to fix these issues as am still relatively new to building websites. Is there anyone who may be able to help with the above?
Many thanks in advance,

Hi Matt,
Thank you for the details, I can relate to you how difficult it sometimes gets with the domains. Here are the suggestions to help you with the issues:
1)You can first point the domain to Godaddy’s servers, and you will have to get the details from them. Here are the instructions to help you with it:
Point WordPress Domain to Godaddy
2)You can then begin the transfer of the domain, here the steps to be followed in details:

Thank you very much for the swift reply.
I will certainly try your suggestions today and see how I get on.Quick question with pointing the domain to GoDaddy’s servers, will this effect my MX or email records?
This was flagged up to me but I wasn’t sure. Thanks again,

Hi Matt,
Emails should not be affected by this. If you have your email hosted on Godaddy itself you can manage it using these guidelines:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/add-email/add-godaddy-email/
These settings will help you to keep them in place till your domain is with WordPress.com.
Hope this helps, let me know if you have any further questions.
Thanks!

It takes time to propagate the changes. Make sure name server are correct and wait silly 24 to 48 hours.

Hi there,
I’m afraid you’ve had some inaccurate information in this thread, as all the links you’ve been given applies to domains registered with WordPress.com, while your domain is in fact registered with GoDaddy. I’m surprised GoDaddy support did not point out to you that your domain was already registered with them, meaning it’s quite impossible to transfer a domain to them.
To point your domain to GoDaddy as well, you need to log in on their end and change the name servers there. There is no way to do this on WordPress.com for domains that are only mapped here.
Quick question with pointing the domain to GoDaddy’s servers, will this effect my MX or email records?
Yes. If you point the name servers away from WordPress.com all DNS records you’ve added here will stop working. You’ll need to re-add those records to your domain’s DNS on GoDaddy’s end to ensure your email keeps working. Preferably you should have done this before switching the name servers to prevent downtime on your email.
If you will no longer be using your domain with your WordPress.com site, you might want to consider cancelling the domain mapping upgrade on your site, or at least disabling auto-renew so you’re not charged for its renewal again next year. You can do this from the Purchases page:

Hi Kokkieh,
Many thanks for your help, I’ve managed to make the switch and the site is all now running smoothly.
http://agentpublicity.comI am now on to the SEO side of things which is also proving really tricky.
I have installed and set up Yoast on my new WordPress.org site, however I think I might need to sort some other things out using google webmaster tools etc. When searching for A.Gent Publicity, google is still showing my old website pages, rather than my new site.
Does anyone know how I can point search engines to my new site and delete the old website links that are showing up?
Thank you in advance.

When searching for A.Gent Publicity, google is still showing my old website pages, rather than my new site.
That is normal. After any URL change on a website search engines will first need to re-index the site at the new address before the new address will start showing up in search results. This can take anything from four to eight weeks, but once the process completes you should have about the same amount of search traffic as you had before the switch.
Make sure Yoast is set up correctly (please contact Yoast support directly for help with that) and that the new domain is verified in Search Console, and then keep on creating content. Once Google updates things on their end the correct site will start showing up in search results.
