transferring domain name vs mapping

  • Unknown's avatar

I am wondering if it would be cheaper to transfer my domain name/hosting completely to wordpress or if it would be cheaper to map it from my current domain name provider (godaddy)? Also, I am reading through your details but I am unsure of the answer. I currently have yahoo business hosting my business email. It states that wordpress provides email forwarding. Does this mean I would be able to drop yahoo business email, not have a dedicated email server account, and just have wordpress forward that emails that would be going to my business account to the email of my choice? By the way it reads I should be able to not need business email hosting and just have the emails forwarded for free by wordpress. Trying to be cost effective. Thank you for your help!

    Hi cypher3dx,

Custom domains are a feature of paid plans so you will need to upgrade regardless of whether you decided to map or transfer a domain to WordPress.com:

    https://wordpress.com/pricing/

The domain credit included in paid plans will cover the cost of domain mapping but the domain itself will still need to be renewed through your current provider each year.

    Or…

The domain credit will cover the cost of transferring the domain from GoDaddy to WordPress.com and automatically renewing it for another year once the transfer has completed successfully. After that, it will be renewed at the regular price (not using the domain credit from a plan).

It states that wordpress provides email forwarding.

We do, yes! There is more information about the available options here:

Do you currently have email hosting set up through Yahoo? By that I mean you can send and receive emails at a custom address based on the domain? Or do you only have email forwarding?

I can send and receive emails at a custom address that uses my domain name, I use Yahoo business. I am going through Yahoo business mail but the domain name I own outside of Yahoo business.
