Transferring domain or mapping

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello, I purchased naturalstatesolar.com , .net, and .org from godaddy. I am only going to build the site around the .com. What would be the pros and cons of either transferring or mapping

    Thanks

    Hello,

If you are planning to build the website on WordPress.com and you transfer the domain, it means you’ll be able to control both your site and your domain from one account, and you’ll also just have to pay one provider to renew both.

If you map the domain, you’ll have to remember to pay your domain provider as well as WordPress.com for the annual renewals, and some changes on your domain will have to be made on GoDaddy’s end rather than WordPress.com, meaning we can’t help you with making those kinds of changes. On the other hand, the domain renewal cost at your current provider might be cheaper than WordPress.com, or if you have a complex DNS setup (since you just purchased the domain, I doubt that this is the case) it might be easier to keep the domain there so you don’t have to move all those settings over to WordPress.com.

So it depends on which option is more convenient or cost effective for you. Either way, your domain will show your WordPress.com site – there’s no real difference in how things work in that regard between these two options.

In addition, here are the steps for both Mapping and Transferring the domain to WordPress.com

    Mapping: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
    Transfer: https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/

    I hope this helps.
