Transferring domain/hosting to WordPress.com

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello, first post here.

How would I go about transferring my domain to wordpress.com? I have paid £11 for ‘mapping’ but nothing seems to have happened – I tried to publish a post and the page doesn’t exist… Also, how do I ensure that I have web hosting at wordpress.com?

The domain was registered and is currently hosted with uk2.net.

Bit clueless when it comes to this, so any assistance would be very much appreciated!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi kennware,

If you signed up for an account at WordPress.com, then you have hosting with WordPress.com
If you purchased domain mapping on WordPress.com then you should already have an account.
If you are not sure click here to sign up
    http://wordpress.com/signup/

Otherwise, login and follow the steps here
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/

This will allow you to map your domain to your WordPress.com site.

From what I saw, it seems that there is no content (besides dummy content) on kennware.co.uk and it is not a WordPress site. You won’t be able to use the theme from that site.
You will need to select another one from WordPress.com

If you have any other questions don’t hesitate to ask.

Also, if you need additional help you should post your WordPress.com URL or the URL associated with your WordPress.com account.

    You have Three potential issues

    1) you are inside the 72 hour period that it sometimes takes for changes to migrate around the internet

    2) Your name-servers are not pointing to WordPress.COM, see: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/#instructions-for-mapping-an-existing-domain

    3) You might need a zone record added by the staff, the automatic zone record function seems to be having some problems of recent, I have flagged this for the staff to help

    Thanks for the quick replies.

So should I follow those mapping instructions (e-mail concerning changing DNS) and then could I cancel my existing web hosting?

i.e. Will my website be 100% hosted by WordPress.com and not UK2.net?

    – my URL is kennwaredotcodotuk.wordpress.com but I haven’t used it beyond redirecting to kennware.co.uk.

If you domain map kennware.co.uk to kennwaredotcodotuk.wordpress.com – the contents of kennwaredotcodotuk.wordpress.com will be displayed and visitors will see kennware.co.uk – as the URL in their browser

yes you in that case will be hosted on WordPress.COM, you will however need to renew the registration for kennware.co.uk with your registrar yearly and also renew domain mapping with WordPress.COM

OK, this is what I have done:

    – Paid for domain mapping for kennware.co.uk.
    – Changed the DNS settings on the domain’s registrar.

I am getting the following message when I attempt to view or publish on the domain: “Forbidden

You don’t have permission to access / on this server.
Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.”

    How do I fix this?

Also, I do not plan on using the kennwaredotcodotuk.wordpress.com domain – how do I go about ONLY publishing for kennware.co.uk?

    Thanks!

DON’T ADJUST / DELETE – CHANGE ANYTHING – it looks like you just need to wait for things to migrate across the internet

    Hold Your Horses!

It can take as long as 72 hours for DNS changes to become widely available. If you’re still not seeing your site loading at kennware.co.uk, please wait a few more hours, clear your browser cache, and try again.
    Nameservers Validated!

Congratulations! The nameservers appear to be set up correctly for kennware.co.uk.

    More Information
    Primary Blog is Set

kennware.co.uk is set as the primary domain for kennwaredotcodotuk.wordpress.com and will appear in the address bar when you visit the site.

Also, I do not plan on using the kennwaredotcodotuk.wordpress.com domain – how do I go about ONLY publishing for kennware.co.uk?

The way domain mapping works is you always work in the base blog (kennwaredotcodotuk.wordpress.com) in your case (the Dashboard, when making Posts and such) – while your visitors will see kennware.co.uk when they visit

The site linked to my name is Domain Mapped – click on it if you want to see what domain mapping looks like – my base URL is captnmike.wordpress.com

Thanks a lot for walking me through that, I’ll hang on before making any further edits, etc.

You’re site looks great and I can see how the mapping works now!

Lastly, the web hosting… I won’t have to re-new the hosting I have with UK2.net now that the domain is mapped to WordPress.com – I’ll just have to re-new the domain itself?

  • Unknown's avatar

Right, you don’t need to renew your hosting with uk2.net.

You will need to renew your domain with them and the domain mapping with WordPress. However, you could transfer your domain to WordPress if you want, so you wouldn’t have to deal with uk2.net anymore.

Correct – but if you had email with kennware.co.uk – you will need to make other arrangements – some cost – some don’t

Thanks & you are welcome – good luck

Thanks for all the help guys.

I didn’t think you could transfer a domain TO wordpress.com though? Would be interested in doing so if it is possible though.

  • Unknown's avatar

WordPress.COM is not set up t accept incoming domain name transfers – so the domain needs to be registered not here

  • Unknown's avatar

True, sorry about that. You can’t transfer domains to WordPress.com only map an existing one or register a new one.
    Good call @auxclass :)

It’s all up and working now – thanks for the help.
