Transferring existing domain
-
Hi,
We are looking to transfer our website to WordPress, we have so far build the website within WordPress and next will need to transfer our existing domain. I have a few questions.
How much downtime will be expected for this to be completed?
We have email connected to our domain, can this be transferred over and will there be any downtime for emails?
Are we best to map or completely transfer the website? Thanks

Hi there!
Are we best to map or completely transfer the website?
If you will transfer the domain, your domain registration and billing will be moved from your current domain provider to WordPress.com. That means in future you’ll manage all aspects of your domain here, including renewal, cancellation, or a future transfer.
If you will map your domain, your domain registration will stay with your current provider, and you’ll point the domain to WordPress.com instead. Use this if your domain is less than 60 days old, or you have a domain extension that cannot be transferred to WordPress.com.
Most TLDs (extensions) require at least 60 days from the registration date or last transfer before a domain is eligible to transfer.
How much downtime will be expected for this to be completed?
DNS changes can take 24–72 hours to propagate – this is the timeframe required for DNS servers worldwide to update their records for a given domain name. So some downtime should be expected any time you make changes to your domain name.
We have email connected to our domain, can this be transferred over and will there be any downtime for emails?
Yes, this can be transferred too.
If you’re interested in transferring your domain to WordPress.com, please follow this guide:

Thanks for your help!
Do they advise that we get a professional IT person to help with the transfer? Is this complex? Is there anything that can go wrong?
Are you able send instructions on how to unlock a domain?
Regarding transferring over emails,
How do we do this? -
Hi @stvincentsconsultingcc043d4e5a, if you’ll reach out from the account that owns the upgrades, you’ll be able to reach our support team. We can generally walk you through the DNS changes.
The account you’re posting from doesn’t have any associated sites on our servers, though. Can you send a link to the WordPress.com site you’ve been working on?

We haven’t yet upgraded as we are looking into it more before we get the sign off.
The site we’ve been working on is https://stvincentshealthandpubicsectorconsulting.wordpress.com/
Still some plugins I want to add when we do upgrade.
Thank you

Hi there,
We have put together a guide on how to point or transfer your domain to WordPress.com:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/
Also, note that, if you plan on using plugins, you’ll need to upgrade to our Business plan, as that’s the only plan that allows the installation of plugins. You can read more about that here:
