Transferring from GoDaddy
-
I have already purchased my domain through GoDaddy, and a Basic Managed WordPress Site through GoDaddy as well. I don’t like GoDaddy’s support, so I want to change to domain hosting and website building with WordPress. However, I still have more than one year’s subscription to WordPress through GoDaddy. There doesn’t seem to be a way to speak to anyone at WordPress to help me transfer it without losing that money. Can anyone help (in plain English please!)
I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

Hi there!
I think there’s some confusion here. There are three different “WordPress” at play here:
1. The free, open-source WordPress software which powers your website.
2. WordPress.org which is the open-source project that works on the WordPress software and where you can get the software for free to use on your own hosting provider.
3. WordPress.com which is a managed hosting provider of the WordPress software and with whom you’re contacting now.Depending on GoDaddy’s refund policy, it may not be possible to get a refund – you would need to contact them directly to ask about that.
However, you can transfer your domain here by using the first-year domain credit included on all our yearly plans which will add another year to the domain registration fee you already paid, so you wouldn’t lose that at least. Just make sure you start the domain transfer before you cancel anything on GoDaddy’s end.

I hope that helps! Let us know if you have other questions.
