Transferring from WordPress.com to WordPress.org issue

  • Unknown's avatar

So I set up separate web hosting for my website joezoll.com (the give free domain is joezollcom.wordpress.com) with HostGator. After going through this process I am not sure if I did everything correctly.

When I am on the dashboard for my website after setting it up, it looks like I am on wordpress.org. However, when I click something like tools or plugins, I am brought to that page with the url reading WordPress.com. This is made more obvious when I see that I still have to pay for plugins (WordPress.org themes are free right?)

I am pretty confused, and would appreciate help.

    Thank you!

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

  • Hi Joe,

joezoll.com and joezollcom.wordpress.com are two completely different sites.

You have joezoll.com registered with us, under your WordPress.com site. But you currently have that domain pointed to Hostgator’s servers, and it’s loading a site built using the open source WordPress.org software on their hosting.

The site you see when you click on My Sites here on WordPress.com, where you still need to pay to use plugins is joezollcom.wordpress.com, not joezoll.com. The actual site at joezoll.com has no connection to your WordPress.com account at all, and we only have control over the domain itself, not over the site.

To access the dashboard for joezoll.com, you need to log into your admin user account for that site at http://joezoll.com/wp-login.php, using the admin credentials you created while installing WordPress on your hosting account at Hostgator. If you don’t have those credentials, please contact Hostgator support directly for help resetting those.

I hope this clarifies things for you, but please let me know if you have any more questions about this.

Thank you so much kokkieh, that helps a lot. And I am able to access the dashboard for joezoll.com.

If I want to completely migrate from WordPress.com to WordPress.org, is there anything I could do about that? I am not interested in using the domain joezollcom.wordpress.com anymore, considering how much better and simpler joezoll.com is.

My main intention is to have the freedom of plugins and any other benefits WordPress.org brings using only joezoll.com.

    Thank you,

    Joe

Whether or not you decide to keep joezollcom.wordpress.com is up to you.

To close your account down here, you would need to transfer your domain from WordPress.com to another domain registrar (Hostgator would be an option), once that is no longer on your account here, you can follow the steps here to close your account as this is not something we can do for you:

    https://wordpress.com/support/close-account/

Note: This not only shuts down your username, it deletes all the sites associated with your WordPress.com account and all their contents. After a few weeks, this data will be entirely purged from WordPress.com’s servers and the process cannot be reversed. Therefore, please be certain you want to cancel your entire WordPress.com presence before proceeding.

    I hope that helps!
