Transferring hosting to WordPress?

  My blog (http://snacktheknife.com/) is currently being hosted by a friend but he needs to shut off all sites using php so I need to find a new host. I’m a little confused by WordPress’s hosting service. Do I need to sign up for a free blog then pay WordPress to upgrade/map to my own domain name afterwards?
