Transferring MX records.

I am trying to transfer a domain to our wordpress.com site that has e-mail attached and was told that I need to have WordPress register our MX records so that our e-mail will function after registration. I want to do this BEFORE remapping the domain so that our e-mail is not out of commission longer than it has to be. Please tell me the best first step in this instance. In your tutorial it says to contact you to do so, but I tried this a week ago and still haven’t heard back….????

I agree with auxclass, you need to get the domain mapping upgrade first, which means you have to point the name servers at WordPress. However this should not mean that your email is out of commission as long as you set up the MX records immediately.

Propagation of the name server change will take up to 72 hours. Some parts of the world will see the new WordPress domain within an hour and other will take much longer. When this is taking place the sites that have not seen the change will still see the old DNS record at your domain registrar, which will include the correct MX records.

If it takes you ten minutes to configure the MX records on the WordPress name servers I would be surprised if anyone would see the record before the update – with the possible exception of someone with a computer within your domain registrar’s office!
