transferring my domain from another web design company

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there,
I have recently created my new wordpress.com site for my business to replace one I had designed for me through a web company some 10 years ago. The problem is, although I own my old domain, the web design company can only transfer the domain to me through another host / registrar. They won’t change the nameservers as I am no longer their client.

Please can you tell me what hosting package I need to buy for my .co.uk domain, that will be compatible with wordpress.com? And where I can buy it from? I have no idea! Thank you so much!

  • While we register new domains here at WordPress.com, we’re not able to accept incoming transfers of existing domain names. Therefore, we recommend that you keep the name registered at your current registrar(or, transfer to another registrar such as GoDaddy or 1and!). You can use the domain for your site here at WordPress.com by mapping the domain, as explained here:

Thank you very much that’s a big help.

    Best wishes.

    Oh one final question please…
Would it be possible for me to simply buy one month’s hosting with 1and1 for example, and then after the month was up I could re-buy my domain through wordpress.com?

    thanks in advance…

  • I’m afraid that would not work. The only way to buy it here would be to cancel the domain, wait for it to be released, and then re-register it here.

The problem with that plan is that, at best, you can be without your domain for weeks or months. And at worst, you can lose control over it and never be able to register it again. So I do not advice that route.

Ok, so I need to buy 12 months hosting . After 12 months can I then re-register my domain somewhere?
(I’m just trying to keep costs as low as I can and not pay for things I don’t need – and I don’t really need hosting forever as wordpress.com hosting is free). I just want to pay to own the domain which is only £6 per year through most registrars.

Also, when I buy hosting, do I need linux or windows operating system? Or doesn’t it matter? Sorry about all the questions I’m so new to this!

    Hi there,

Josh is out of the office for a couple of days and I thought I would step in (plus I know a fair amount about this stuff so he would just ask me anyway! ;) ).

If you are just looking to host your site here at WordPress.com, then you don’t need hosting with one of those other companies at all. It can seem like it, and they may try and sell you hosting (they may even say “you need hosting if you’re going to have your site use WordPress”, but that is a different kind of WordPress and you really don’t).

All you need to buy from one of those companies is what is called a domain transfer. It’s usually $10 to $20 and with the purchase price you get a year’s renewal on your domain name. You need to make sure you complete the transfer process (it can take a bit of time and it can be confusing . . . unfortunately we can’t really help you, you’ll need to talk to the help departments at your old and new domain companies for help with that). But once it’s done, you can point your domain towards us. Let me know when that happens and I’ll be happy to help.

Also, I wanted to give you this article. It’s by Lifehacker (a tech site), and it breaks down the 5 best domain registrars. I think it’s a great place to start shopping for a new home for your domain! http://lifehacker.com/5943452/five-best-domain-name-registrars

Let me know if you have any questions.
