Transferring my own domain to my wordpress blog – help?

  • Unknown's avatar

Firstly I would just like to apologise for the fact that I’m a complete dummy when it comes to all this so I’m sorry if these are idiotic questions, it’s all quite new to me!

I have just started a blog on wordpress – earthmamadoula.wordpress.com – and also I have a website http://www.earth-mama.co.uk that I built using Mr. Site (I have no HTML knowledge at all and just don’t have the time to get my head around it!).

I am really hating Mr. Site and all their rubbish glitches and wanting to move away from them, but I can’t afford the services of a web designer at this point in my life. So I am wondering if it would be possible to move my domain name over to my WordPress blog and add pages and sub pages etc. like I have on the .co.uk site to WordPress. Anybody have any idea if this is possible without needing a great deal of technical knowledge? I don’t want anything bespoke, I like the template I currently have on the blog. If it’s possible to do this, what would it cost me with WordPress? Also I have mailboxes with Mr. Site – the one I use and need being (email visible only to moderators and staff) – if I moved my domain over would I still be able to keep this mailbox or would I lose it?

If anyone has any advice (please avoid the technical jargon!) that’d be great, thank you! :-)

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You can change your nameservers to point to WordPress.COM and then map your domain name to your current blog. Cost about $ 12– US plus your domain registration.

You can add your old content to Pages on your WordPress.COM site, same as doing a Post as far as the mechanics go, your old content looks fairly straightforward so it should not be too hard.

Email – you can change your email to be hosted on Google Aps (several options, some free some fee based) there is some mapping that needs to be done but I think the instructions are getting better, You can also pay you old host to just do the email, you will need to do some DNS mapping but you also need the DNS mapping if you do the Google Aps method.

Thanks for the info! I will look into Google Aps and pray I can get my head around it first and foremost (my biggest issue, though not the only one by far, with Mr Site is that every now and again I find out I haven’t received an email that I know has been sent to me so that is my biggest priority.

How would I go about changing my nameserver to point in a new direction, will that all be done through Mr. Site?

Also one last question I forgot to ask, if I did do this, would there be any way to change the homepage that people land on first to be something besides the blog?

You change where the nameservers are pointed at your registrar, in your case Mrsite.

Yes you can change the landing page or opening page to a static page, easy to do.

WordPress.COM also has a Contact Form so you can take your email off the internet and also ask for specific information from people who contact you if you want.

    Hi,

Please accept our apologies for any difficulties you have been experiencing by using your Mr Site.

You can very easily change the nameservers in your Mr Site domain name with those of WordPress. Simply log in to your account as usual and go under Extras > Admin > Edit nameservers.

I will be more than happy to assist you personally if you have any queries with your Mr Site account, please email to (email visible only to moderators and staff) and mention my name in the subject field.
