Transferring of domain name
-
I currently have a long-running website on WordPress, with the domain name with Go Daddy. I’m looking to transfer the domain name over to WordPress. If I do so, would that change anything at all regarding my website, or will every continue just as as it’s always been?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hey @dettinger47
Great question to ask before making the move, and the short answer is no, transferring your domain to WordPress.com won’t affect your website at all. Everything keeps running exactly as it is.
Think of it like moving your car registration to a different office, the car still drives the same, it’s just managed from a different place. Your site, content, design, posts, none of that changes.
The only thing that actually changes is where you manage the domain, renewals, DNS settings, and all that stuff will happen inside your WordPress.com dashboard instead of GoDaddy. A lot of people actually find that more convenient since everything’s in one place.
A couple of things worth knowing before you transfer:
- Your domain needs to be at least 60 days old and unlocked at GoDaddy before a transfer can happen, this is an ICANN rule, not a WordPress thing
- You’ll need the EPP/authorization code from GoDaddy to initiate the transfer, you can get this from your GoDaddy account under domain settings
- DNS propagation after the transfer can take up to 48 hours, but in practice it’s usually much faster and your site stays accessible the whole time
You can kick off the transfer from My Site → Upgrades → Domains → Transfer a domain.
