Transferring or Mapping a Domain

    I have a website and domain through another company. I want to create a new website with WordPress. If I transfer my domain right away, will my old website not work anymore? Or if I map my domain, then create the website; can I then transfer my domain? I don’t want my old website to be down while I’m trying to create a new one in WordPress.

    Hey there, you’re welcome to create your new site with us before pointing the domain here. That way your current site can stay “live” until your new one is ready.

    I do recommend getting a plan earlier on if you’ll need it, since they have other features you might find useful, including direct support:
    https://wordpress.com/plans

    You can either choose to transfer or map your domain, or skip both options until you’re ready. If you do choose to transfer or map right now, it still won’t automatically point to our services until you make that switch in its settings. It will continue pointing at your older site until then.
