Transferring posts

I have had my free personal WordPress.com blog since 2009. I’m now considering upgrading (to get rid of ads) to WP’s $48/year plan using my own recently-purchased domain name. I have read how to do the actual domain transfer, as well as how to move existing content from my free blog to the ‘new’ blog, but would appreciate any tips from those who may have done this type of move. Thanks!

Hi there!
I recently upgraded my account and bought a domain.
If you bought the domain name from WordPress, you don’t actually need to transfer anything (content or domain), you just select to which site the domain will be connected and that’s it!Now, if you bought the domain from another company, you only have to connect it to your blog, which is fairly simple but it is different for each registrar. You can check the instructions here
https://wordpress.com/support/domains/connect-existing-domain/#steps-to-connect-a-domainYou will only have to do the actual “domain transfer” if you bought the domain from another company but want to manage it here from now on. I guess you already know the procedure but here is the guide
https://wordpress.com/support/move-domain/incoming-domain-transfer/If you are doing the domain transfer, it could take some time. The best tip I can give you is to first connect your domain to your WordPress site, and then start the actual transfer, in that way your site will always be available.
In any case, upgrading your plan and adding a domain won’t affect your content and you won’t need to transfer it.
Good luck!

Thank you so much for your reply! You supported most of what I’ve read. However, I’m not sure we’re on the same page.
In your last statement, you indicated my content would not be affected. However, I will NOT be using my current blog name as the new domain name (unless I want to pay $18,000 to keep it!). So wouldn’t this mean that WordPress would consider it a new blog? And if so, I’m confused as to how the content would be automatically transferred?
Maybe I’m missing something?

Maybe you can clarify some things first. From what company did you purchase your new domain name? or what’s the domain name you bought.
(unless I want to pay $18,000 to keep it!)
The cost of the transfer is $18 and you will have your new domain managed here on WordPress.com and you can link it to your current blog sayitnow.wordpress.com, in that case, your current free domain name and your purchased domain will redirect to the same blog.
However, you don’t need to transfer your domain, you could just connect it to your current blog by changing the DNS in your domain registrar. In this case, you will need to pay for a connection subscription that costs $13/year but is free for any paid plan.
The transfer is also free with a paid plan.

I’ve done some more research based on your replies and have decided on the path to follow. Thanks for your help!
BTW, my reference to the $18,000 — which has since been increased to $20,000! — is because “sayitnow.com” is a “premium” domain.
