Transferring site

  I recently started a blog with wix.com But I would like to switch it over to WordPress. How does this work? I pay for my specific domain name but would like to shift it over. Do I need to cancel with them?

  Hi! I’d recommend transferring the domain rather than cancelling, or if you can’t transfer it just yet, you can map it like so:
  http://wordpress.com/support/domains/map-existing-domain/

  Thank you! It appears that I cannot transfer my site yet. If I go through with the mapping, does that mean I would need to pay for both platforms at the same time? Also, will my content be transferred over? Thank you so much!

  Not exactly. To explain if your domain is a new one, the ability to transfer is blocked for 60 days. That sounds to be the case for you since you mention you can’t transfer at this time.

  In that case I recommend mapping for now, and then waiting for the 60 day lock to be lifted. That will allow you to proceed now with a custom address on your WordPress.com site, and then a few months down the road you can transfer the domain to us (which would be totally seamless since you would have already mapped the domain)

  As long as you do that before your upgrades at Wix are set to renew, you can safely close that account and then would only be paying once (here) to renew next year.

  Also, will my content be transferred over?

  Content transfer does not happen automatically when you map (or transfer) your domain, so you will want to follow the process here to import any pages/blog posts you have as Wix: https://transferto.wordpress.com/wix

  If I can make a recommendation, it’s usually best to import your Wix contents first, and then transfer/map your domain after the import is complete and you see the contents on your WordPress.com site.
