Transferring Site Ownership & Post Authors
-
Good morning! I have three different sites under three different email addresses. I’d like to merge all of the sites onto one user account so that I can manage all three sites from the WP app. This means transferring ownership of two of my sites to this main account.
When I started to do this, one of the warning notes stated that the blog post author would be changed on all existing posts. Is this true, and does that mean that I will only be able to post as one username going forward?
Basically, I’d like to keep the same posting authors/usernames on my two other blogs (including past posts) and not have them associated with this username/role. My three sites are three different topics, and I’d like to keep them all separate.
Hopefully that makes sense. Please let me know if you need more information.
Thank you!

Hi Pam that’s entirely correct. Every site you have under the same username will use the same display name.
Having said that once you transfer the sites to the same username account you can invite the other accounts as Editors or Admins on each site and reattach their name to the related posts.
I hope that is clear. Regardless I’ve left this tagged for Staff in case I missed something.

Oops was logged in as another site! See, this is why I need to merge hahaha. I appreciate your response!

Hi @pamprz ! @justjennifer is super awesome and has this covered.
If you needed to transfer ownership while keeping the old author’s name on a post, we could help you with that, but it sounds like that isn’t what you’re after anyway. Just let us know if you need more help!

Actually that is part of the issue. I’d like to transfer 2 of my sites and keep the original author names connected to all previous posts. Then I can just set those old usernames as admins once I transfer so then going forward I can keep posting from the same authors.
-
Okay, no problem. Do you want to transfer “ownership” of the site itself to the new users?
-
@supernovia – *blush* Glad to know I wasn’t entirely off with my pre-coffee, mobile ramblings. :)
Thinking about this again, since @pamprz said she wants to administer all three of her sites under her current username, but keep each site’s posts separate with their current admin/author, I don’t wonder if it wouldn’t be simpler to add her @pamprz account as Admin on her other sites instead.
That takes out the step of transferring ownership. The biggest challenge I’ve found with the above method is remembering to change the post author when publishing new posts.
What would be the other Pros/Cons of each method?

@justjennifer you are awesome and I truly appreciate your input and help!
I originally did just what you suggested and put myself as Admin on the 2 sites in question; however, I wasn’t receiving updated stats/notifications through the WP app on all 3 sites, only for the primary site that I was currently logged in as.
I suppose I’m being a bit high maintenance with all of this lol. I just wanted to be able to manage all 3 sites from the WP app at once and receive notifications for all three sites through one logged in account without logging in/out every time I wanted to check up on one of my sites. But then also keep the separate author/usernames for blog posts as mentioned before.
Thanks again to both of you for your help!

@pamprz – You are really welcome. Let’s wait to hear from @supernovia on what would be the best way for you to go given what you said above.

however, I wasn’t receiving updated stats/notifications through the WP app on all 3 sites, only for the primary site that I was currently logged in as.
Can you clarify which stuff you’re missing there? You should be able to see stats and what not.
Also, I can make one account the owner of all three sites if you’d like, without removing the other users or reassigning posts.
-
Hi @supernovia! So when I added this account/username as an admin on my other two sites, I would sign in to this account on the WP app and would only see notifications for the blog associated with this account (randomthoughtsandthings.com), nothing for the other two sites.
I’d love to take you up on your offer of making one account the owner of all three sites, as long as I don’t lose other users/post authors or the ability to post as these authors moving forward.
Should I email you specific account/site information? Thanks again :)

We’ll just need to do some confirmations. I’ve just emailed. Watch for those notes and we’ll be waiting to hear back. Cheers!
