Transferring stats to wordpress.org, and a redirect question

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

I understand from other topics that I need a moderator’s help with transferring the stats from my wordpress.com site (it had a custom url, which is the same as the wordpress.org one: http://10mh.net) to the new self-hosted site.

This is to request the transfer, please.

Also, do I need to redirect from http://10mh.wordpress.com to the new site? I have never used this address, I got the custom url right away, so there shouldn’t be anything connected to that address. Can I just delete it?

    Many thanks for your help!

Also note that these threads are answered based on timestamps, oldest first, and every new reply you make to this thread will move it to the back of the queue, so it is best to not post here any further until you hear back from staff.

  • While you wait for their answer, please make sure that you have the Jetpack plugin installed on your self-hosted site, as they can’t move the stats unless you have that installed.

    Hi there,

Your stats have been merged as requested. As for the redirect, I see that you removed the domain mapping, so that means 10mh.wordpress.com will no longer redirect to 10mh.net.

If you want it to redirect you can purchase the domain mapping separately ($13/year) by going to Store > My Domains in your Dashboard.

Let me know if you have any questions with this!

I think the OP was talking of the site redirect upgrade to redirect his WP.com URL to the new self-hosted site.

    @jcgreenway
Considering how long your site has been around, I think the site redirect might be a good idea, as without it all permalinks to your WP.com site will still lead to that site rather than your self-hosted one, though I’m not sure how that would be affected by the fact that you had a custom domain on your WP.com site.

In any event, I’d advise against deleting your WP.com site. Deleting is permanent and both your content and your URL will be gone forever. Rather set it to private, then you always know you have it as a backup should you decide to come back here. http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

Thanks very much, both of you, for the advice and for doing the stats.

I think it confused me because it was telling me to point the nameservers back to WordPress.com, so I thought I didn’t need it any more! I’ll renew the redirect and set the wordpress.com url to private.

    Thanks again!

  • Just to be clear, there’s a difference between domain mapping and a site redirect. Domain mapping is if you want to use your custom domain with a WordPress.com site and must be renewed each year.

The site redirect is if you want your WordPress.com URL to redirect to a self-hosted blog on your own domain and you only buy that once: https://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/

Just be sure which of these you actually want to do.

Thanks for clarifying! All done now.

  • I can confirm that your WordPress.com URL now redirects to your self-hosted site.

    Glad we could help :)
