transferring the domain name

We have a wordpress.com site with a purchased domain name for organisation X which no longer exists. We now have a new wordpress.com site for organisation Y and we want to move the purchased domain name from X to Y. I have interpreted the support instructions for this as the ownership gets transferred to another admin could person A from organisation X be the same person in organisation Y?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hello!

Are you referring to the ownership of the domain itself? If that’s the case then as long as you are the owner of that domain, you can update the admin information anytime.

If the domain is hosted here at WordPress.com, then this guide will explain how to do just that: https://en.support.wordpress.com/update-contact-information/

I hope that helps, and let me know if you have any other questions!

Thanks Joe for responding so quickly.
No the ownership to stay with the current owner.

The domain name was purchased through WordPress.
Originally a site was built at wordpress.com, then upgraded to purchase a domain name. We have now built another wordpress.com site and would like to transfer the domain name to the new site and get rid of the old one. Our aim is to get rid of/change the name of the xxxx.wordpress.com that our domain name is attached to, so we built another duplicate site thinking it would be an easier solution!

Do I need to map the old site? upgrade the new site? I am really confused on the correct process. The current owner wants to stay the owner of the domain name. We are both admins for both sites.

    Hi,

I’m fairly certain this is doable, but it may require a new mapping fee. I’m going to tag this for the staff to take a closer look.

Just to give the support a head start, what are the two accounts and the domain?

Is torquayhistory.com the site you wish to delete?

(By the way, I’ve been to Torquay a few times.. beautiful spot and an interesting blog!)

    thanks Joe.

Originally torquayhistoricalsociety.wordpress.com was set up purchasing the domain name torquayhistory.com Now the historical society is another group. Normally nobody sees that torquayhistoricalsociety.wordpress.com site but when a document is downloaded it comes up in the web browser so we want to change it keeping/transferring the domain name torquayhistory.com to the torquayhistory.wordpress.com

    Cheryl

  • Hi Cheryl,

It’s always easier to provide an accurate answer if you give the actual domains and usernames involved :)

The domain, torquayhistory.com, is currently connected to the site, torquayhistoricalsociety.wordpress.com and it belongs to the user, tmww1

To move that domain to torquayhistory.wordpress.com and, I assume, your account, the current owner first has to transfer ownership of the domain. They can find the instructions to do that here:

Transfer a Domain to Another WordPress.com Account

Once the domain is in your account, you can transfer it to the other site via My Site ->Domains, or let me know and I can help with that.

Hi thanks for advice – was cryptic on purpose but understand your point. A public forum isn’t about airing issues. So moving onto our problem.

Yes torquayhistory.com is connected to the torquayhistoricalsociety.wordpress.com belonging to tmww1.

I am not sure how it all works but I am administrator with tmww1 on the above site. I did create the new site with both of us as administrators because I thought that is what we needed to do. Ultimately we just want to remove torquayhistoricalsociety.wordpress.com from coming up.

Can this be done without moving over to the new site – it is just a replica of the current site?

If we have to move across to the new site, can tmww1 do that or does she have to transfer ownership to me as you suggested above?
    Cheryl

  • Ultimately we just want to remove torquayhistoricalsociety.wordpress.com from coming up.

What do you mean exactly? If you’re referring to the URL for media files, those will always use the underlying WordPress.com address, not the custom domain. So if you want to use a different WordPress.com address, you’ll need to move the domain, yes.

If tmww1 wants to stay the owner of the domain they don’t need to transfer it to you, no. As long as they’re an admin on both sites, they can transfer the domain from one site to another. But only the owner of a domain can transfer it, or request my help in transferring it, between sites.

  • Unknown's avatar

okay so that we don’t loose you and go through this again how do I get tmww1 to make contact with you?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi can you please explain what I need to do.

  • Unknown's avatar

    or you do for me…..

  • @tmww1

If you want to move the domain to torquayhistory.wordpress.com, please go to this page and transfer it from there:

    https://wordpress.com/domains/manage/torquayhistory.com/transfer/other-site/torquayhistoricalsociety.wordpress.com

From there you can transfer the domain to any other site where you are an admin. Or please confirm if I must do it for you, but you should be able to do this yourself.

  • Unknown's avatar

    okay thanks, I will try

  • Unknown's avatar

Probably simple but I am afraid I need steps. Too scare to make a mistake.
Once I go to that site which domain do I open from the list? torquayhistory.com, torquayhistorialsociety.wordpress.com or torquayhistory.wordpress.com

  • Unknown's avatar

    thanks, it is done

  • Perfect :)

Please let me know if I can help with anything else.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks for your help but there is one more issue. This morning I made a post and on facebook the link is coming up as torquayhistory.wordpress.com. In the past under the previous site is would come up as torquayhistory.com
    What am i doing wrong?

  • Unknown's avatar

okay sorted, I hadn’t made torquayhistory.com the primary domain!

  • Thanks for letting me know you got it working :)
