Transferring to self-hosting
-
Hi,
I’m looking to transfer my blog immediately into a self-hosted WordPress.org blog. I’m just wondering that, with the paid transfer here on WordPress, will it add additional space for me or will I need to purchase that as well? Will my existing theme and site layout (Twenty-Ten with only minor customizations) transfer over as well? And with that, will a self-hosted blog have unlimited CSS or will I need to purchase that additionally (so I can use my own HTML to make my own blog even more customized).Sorry there’s so many questions–I need all the help I can get and am looking to work quickly since my blog has no more space (eek!) and need it up and running again by Monday.
Thanks for your help!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Awesome; thank you!
Another quick question: I was recently accepted for WordAds and have accrued some money (not yet $100 but getting there!) and was wondering if WordAds will automatically transfer over to my new self-hosted blog? If not, will I be able to bail that money out, or will it be lost? Also, is there an ad program(s) I can download or use for a self-hosted blog if WordAds is unavailable?

Additional Info:
will it add additional space for me or will I need to purchase that as well?
The servers space you will have depends on the package you purchase from your new host. How much space you use for both media and text (WordPress.COM does not count text) will determine how much space you need.
will a self-hosted blog have unlimited CSS
No extra charge for CSS on a self hosted site – you can change ANY of the code once you leave here. You can change the CSS files directly (please make back-ups so when you really goof you can undo things)
(so I can use my own HTML to make my own blog even more customized).
WordPress Themes (both .ORG and .COM) are written in PHP not html – you will have some more options for html inside Posts and Pages (iframe and scrip for instance) – but with the extra features comes more responsibility.
Also if you really crash your self hosted site you are on your own to fix it yourself or hire it done.
That said – good luck

We don’t know what happens with WordAds earnings. It says it doesn’t pay out till you’ve earned $100, so I would expect you’re out of luck.

auxclass and raincoaster– thank you very much for your help! This is a daunting task but your information is much appreciated! Thank you again.

Also, one other thing–how do I prevent my new self-hosted site from crashing? Is that on me or is it my new host?

Let’s be clear about this move. You are becomeing a self hosting blogger and that means you take responsibility for everything, including making sure you purchase a web hosting plan that has eneough bandwidth for your needs. You will be responsible for all upgrades, installations, backups and troubleshooting. You will post to the http://wordpress.org/support/ forums when you need help and find out there is no “hand-holding” support of the kind we provide here on this forum. See here for an overview > http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2010/11/06/setting-up-a-self-hosted-wordpress-org-install/

timethief–thank you. I don’t want to go into this blindly; I eventually want to self-host but I’m just not sure I’m ready yet. It was just a matter of–shoot, I want to self-host (eventually), and now I’m out of space on my .COM blog, so maybe I should just pony up, transfer and do it now? But to need all that done immediately doesn’t seem feasible and so maybe just buying extra space is a better option at the moment.
At any rate, I really appreciate all the information & helpful tips in this forum and on your blog. Thanks!

Out of space? How did you do that? Just register another free blog and hotlink your images, that’s easier than transferring. Or the space upgrade is cheaper.
BTW optimize your images before uploading them and this won’t happen again.
