Transferring to WordPress
-
Hello,
I currently own a domain using a different platform. I would like to rehost my website to WordPress, and would like to take advantage of the 1 year free domain on wordpress with a premium membership. How do I do that without having website downtime?

Hi there,
First create your site at https://wordpress.com/start/site/, migrate your content and otherwise set up your site, and upgrade to a paid plan.
Once you’re ready to make the switch, add the domain mapping upgrade to your site, and update your domain’s name servers:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
Then do the domain transfer as the last step.

Thank you. If i have already started the domain transfer process without mapping, do I need to do something with the name server, or will wordpress automatically set that up?
-
Ah, I see you’ve already done that.
The mapping upgrade was added automatically when the transfer started, but
the name servers will not change automatically. So throughout the transfer, and even after it ends, the domain will continue pointing to your current site. So as long as your hosting account at the current host still remains active, that site will stay online. Then once you’re ready to switch, you’ll make the change on our end instead.
Either way, any downtime should be minimal – while the name server changes are updating across the web the domain should load the old site for some people, and the new site for others, but that should only last a few hours.
