Transferring to wordpress.org

We need to transfer our wordpress.com site to wordpress.org. We will be building an entirely new site with some of the same content. What is the best way to do this without having our site down while we build the new site???
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Many web hosts will give you a link so that you can access and view your site and work on it ahead of switching your domain name over to the new site. Check with your web host to see if they have this feature.
As far as moving your content over to the new site, you can export it from here and then import it into the new site ahead of time and when everything is all ready, change the DNS records and then about 24 hours later set the site here at wordpress.COM to private. Typically within 24 hours all domain propagation is complete.

I too am trying to do this… How do I go about removing my current domain url? Do I merely deleted from my domain list and the choose the example.wordpress.com address as it was before I used my own domain?

You have to set the primary back to the example.wordpress.com address, and if your domain name was registered here, you go into the domain management and point the DNS at your new web host.

If your domain name was registered somewhere else, then you will have to go to that registrar and do the DNS change there.
