Transferring website

I am wanting to transfer my website to WordPress. It was built and is maintained by someone else. I am wanting to move it to WordPress and maintain it myself. Would you please explain to me the steps to do this? Thank you in advance.

    I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

  • Hi @bn925wzc9t, sure thing. How you’ll move it here depends on what kind of site it is now. Can you send a link?

    This may help too:

Thank you for your help. My website is:

    bigheartspetsitting.com

The site was built for me and is maintained. I would like to transfer to WordPress, edit, and maintain it myself.

  • Hi there,

It looks like that’s a static HTML site, which means it’s not possible to move it to another site/platform using an export/import process, as there isn’t any way to export your current site as a single file.

Instead, you’ll need to do this manually, in other words, copy each page in turn, and paste the content into a new page on your WordPress.com site.

We have a detailed overview of the best way to do this here:

Let us know if you have any questions, or run into trouble with any step in that process.

Thank you again for the instructions. I am not skilled at this, so the detailed instructions are very helpful. My next question is how I go about moving my domain to WordPress. I assume from reading the instructions that I can build my WordPress website while my old website is still active. But once it’s complete, how do I move the domain over to WordPress? When I clicked on the link “using your custom domain”, the full instructions link said “page not found”. Maybe this is a separate question, but basically what I am saying is I need the instructions to complete the process so that when people type in my web address my WordPress website will pop up, instead of my current one. I’m registered with Dotster. Does it have to move to WordPress in order for people to see the new site instead? I’m a bit confused on how that works. And thank you again on taking the time to help me.

Go to https://wordpress.com/start/site/ to create a new WordPress.com site in your account. You can skip the domains step for now and just use the free address we provide.

Once you’ve moved all your content and you’re ready to make the switch, add a paid plan to your site, and then add your domain.

    Here you have two options:

    1) You can keep your domain registered at your current provider and just point it to us. For this you’ll need our domain connection upgrade, and you’ll need to make changes to your domain’s DNS over at Dotster to point it to us. Instructions for this option are here:

    https://wordpress.com/en/support/domains/connect-existing-domain/

If you select this option, you’ll pay us for a plan, but you’ll still pay Dotster for your annual domain renewal. You don’t need to continue paying them for hosting.

    2) You can transfer the domain registration to us so we become your domain provider. One domain transfer is included for free in all annual plans, and it will also renew the domain for an additional year.
