Transferring website

I already have a domain site and it’s recommended to move it. I’m leery of moving it because I may lose it. I don’t want to lose all thr years I’ve built my website.

    I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

  • Hi,

Do you mean that you have a domain registered elsewhere and you’d like to use it with a WordPress.com site?

If so, you have two options. You can leave the domain at your current registrar and connect it with your WordPress.com site. Or you can transfer your domain’s registration to WordPress.com. Functionally, it really makes no difference. Both work equally well and will send users to your site when they enter your domain into their browser.

What it really comes down to is if you have opinions on the ease of keeping your site billing in one place (one bill from WordPress.com vs a bill from WordPress.com and a bill from your domain registrar). Or if you have a particular reason to want to use an external registrar (perhaps you have many domains and want to keep them all registered in the same place).

A bit more information can also be found here:

    Thanks for your quick reply.

My website is a travel website. Since we are no longer traveling I have not updated the website in a few years. It was built on the old iWeb format. If I transfer my iWeb website to WordPress can I still work on up dating the website? Will it become a WordPress format that I will have to learn?

My ultimate goal is to have my website turned into a book for my grandkids, ( I just hope they care)! There are websites that will convert your website into a book format, however, the iWeb format is one that no one has the ability to convert. Therefore, by turning it into a WordPress format there are companies that will convert WordPress into a book form. Perhaps you do that, which would be awesome. Is the a chat room where I can talk to a live person? It’s just so much easier to communicate that way.

  • Hi there, we do not have a way to import from iWeb, so you’d have to re-do the site and copy/paste the content over.

If you’re just starting out with WordPress.com, I recommend you go through our new user’s guide: https://wordpress.com/learn/

In just a few quick steps, you’ll learn about all the best and most useful features of WordPress.com, with lots of screenshots and videos.
