Transferring wordpress site from backup to new wordpress account

    Hello,

I just got a backup of my wordpress website from the former hosting provider and I was looking to get it imported into my account to start hosting and editing the site. I’m familiar with website design, but not to much in word-press, first time here so anything helps. I have wordpress backup file that has a .sql file and beneath threes a .fw-config.php and a .htacess file, and i see all my content in themes. I tried just going into wordpress and using import files but it then fails, as there is no .xml files for it to read. Is anyone able to point me in the right direction on how to get this site up?

  • Hi there,

If your original site still online?

There are two options to import a site to WordPress.com:

    1) Content only, i.e. just posts, pages, comments, and media files. For this you need to get a content export for your site. On a WordPress site you get that at Tools ->Export in the WP-Admin dashboard.

    https://wordpress.com/support/import/

    2) A full-site import. This will import your content, as well as your theme and plugins to a new site on our end. You’ll need to install the Jetpack plugin on your site and connect it to your WordPress.com account before you can do this. You will also need to upgrade the WordPress.com site to our Business Plan, as that plan is required to use plugins and third party themes.

Import Your WordPress Site to WordPress.com — Including Themes and Plugins

Both these options require that the site you’re importing from must still be online during this process.

I’m afraid it’s not possible to import a backup like what your host has given you to WordPress.com.

On our Business Plan we do offer SFTP and PHPMyAdmin access, so if you know how to upload files via SFTP and manually restore a SQL backup you’ll have the ability to do that on our Business Plan. But we don’t provide support for those actions, meaning we can’t do it for you or guide you through the actual process.
