Transferring wordpress.com to wordpress.org

  WordPress.org has better customization than .com and since the domain name is already purchased from wp.com would I still have to purchase or pay for anything if I want to move it to wp.org? This website is for a professor and we are both admins for the site. Once I’m done building his site in wp.org, how simple is it for a non-tech savy professor to customize posts and pages and such without my help?
