… without having to recreate the blog

Beacuse other bloggers moving from wordpress.com to wordpress.org have been confused I’m posting this comment.

    (1) You can export your blog contents (your posts, pages, comments, custom fields, categories, and tags) and links (blogroll) out of your wordpress.com blog and import them into your new wordpress.com blog.

    (2) But when it comes to “recreating” the blog you cannot export the theme you are using at wordpress.com out of the blog. You will have to upload a new wordpress.org theme into your new blog. See > http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/

    (3) You also cannot export widget contents. So if you have text widgets with special content that you created in your wordpress.com blog and want the same ones to to appear in the new blog you will have to copy and paste into the text widget(s) in your new blog.

    (4) Also note that as wordpress.com blogs do not have plugins but wordpress.org blogs do, you will have to set up your new blog with the theme and plugins of your choice first and then export and import contents into it. See > http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/

    (5) If you want your readers to experience a seamless transfer from the root blog URLs in the new blog you will need to purchase domain mapping. If you do not purchase domain mapping all the wordpress.com root blog URLs will be broken and readers clicking on them will experience 404’s (page not found).

    (6) The new blog will start from “unranked” and this cannot be avoided. The authority and backlinks and pagerank achieved by your wordpress.com root blog belong to it. If your traffic remains strong it will take about 4 – 6 months for the new blog to achieve authority, backlinks and pagerank.

    (7) I recommend that you change the blog visibility settings on the wordpress.com root blog to “private”.

Best wishes for a smooth transition. :)
