transferring wp from a Godaddy site
-
I am having trouble with this. I don’t want to repoint my Godaddy domain yet to the website. I want to load the data and make sure it works before I repoint or transfer the domain. How can I create an account without this roadblock?
-
When you start a site here, we’ll give you a free subdomain to build your site under.
You won’t need to add your custom domain until you’re ready.
-
Thanks, how do I get to that?
Do I follow the initial screen that says:
Let’s get your site a domain!
Enter your site’s name or some keywords that describe it to get started.
-
Enter the domain you plan to use now, but you don’t need to direct it to the site or transfer it now, you can do that later.

well that’s not quite true. it wouldn’t let me choose a url that’s already taken. so i had to use a different one. And then it wouldn’t let me load my old site on it. Do I have to pay first?
Also wouldn’t let me load the site from Godaddy. Or using an xml export – it said there was something wrong with the export. Is there some way I can use Updraft to import data?

It’s on an old server that cannot upgrade to a current php so is insecure. It’s using wordpress 5.4.2

Ug, I seem to have set my inside url to artnewsdfworg.wordpress.com, which is not what I wanted. Can I restart the process or is there some way to reset what internal links works? I now have access to repointing the url.

That domain is not in use her, so you should be able to add it.
Start with https://artnewsdfworg.wordpress.com/ you’ll need a site to add the domain to anyway. Then, we have two options for that domain:
Mapping allows you to keep the domain registered with your current domain registrar and direct it to your WordPress.com site: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/map-existing-domain/
A transfer would allow to manage both your site and domain from the same place: https://wordpress.com/support/move-domain/incoming-domain-transfer/

That still doesn’t answer the question of why I couldn’t transfer my data. Is there a better plugin for exporting from WordPress? Does the system choke if your files are too large? What is too large? Does WordPress 5.4.2 not correctly export files? Sorry to have so many questions, but I am concerned about a project that I have worked years on.

If you are using custom WordPress plugins, themes, code these these could contribute to a failed import to a site on WordPress.com.
What I recommend is first referring to this guide we have written on moving your site from self-hosted environment to WordPress.com hosting: https://wordpress.com/support/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/
There are very specific instructions in there which should help. Be sure to follow them carefully.
If your site does use the custom WordPress features – and you wish to keep them – you will need the Business Plan before you import.
Let us know if you have any other questions about migrating your site to WordPress.com. We’ll do our best to help. :)
If you do get the Business plan you will automatically get priority live chat support where Happiness Engineers will be happy to assist you as you step through the process.
