Transffering domain from Godaddy to WordPress? Not mapping it etc .
-
Hello
Please could someone shed some light on something for me, thanks very much in advance.
I see the basic plan includes a custom domain, but what happens if I already have a domain registered with Godaddy? Can I transfer the domain to wordpress so they are the registrar to keep things simple or is my only option to map the domain? If so is the mapping price included in the basic price plan? Or is it an extra cost?
Will I have to keep renewing my yearly domain registration with Godaddy?Thank you to anyone who helps me understand.
I am bit confused (lol!)

Hey there Catcomedian01,
I don’t think WordPress are accepting domain transfers at this time. If you have a custom domain with GoDaddy you would have to map the domain to point to you WordPress site.
If you have a plan and this is the first domain you add a domain to your site, then it’s free of charge:
Adding a domain to your site (either registering a new domain or mapping one you already own) requires a WordPress.com plan. Each plan comes with one free domain credit. However, you can setup additional domains on the same site as add-on upgrades.
After the domain is mapped, GoDaddy will still be your domain provider so you will have to manage the subscription with them indeed.
Mapping a domain sounds a bit complicated but I can assure it’s not, also it’s a common practice and it’s largely used to point to a particular site so it’s a solid method.
Hope this helps!

Hi Ladysawen
Thanks a million for that really helpful reply. You have explained it really well . Please may I ask you another question.
If I upgrade my plan from free to personal and map my domain from Godaddy etc. If I decide in the future to go back to the free plan will I lose my site? Or will it simply switch back to my previous free .wordpress.com domain name? Thanks so much for all your help Ladysawen.

Map an existing domain (one you already own) to your WordPress.com blog – if you already have a domain that you registered and purchased elsewhere. http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/

Thanks timethief for the link,
But I was wondering If I upgrade my plan from free to personal and map my domain from Godaddy etc. If I decide in the future to go back to the free plan will I lose my site? Or will it simply switch back to my previous free .wordpress.com domain name?I have searched but can’t seem to find the answer?
Thanks.

If you downgrade plan from Personal to Free you won’t lose your content.
What happens if I don’t renew my plan?
If you choose to let your plan expire, your site will be switched to our Basic (free) plan. You will no longer have access to the features included in your plan, but your site’s content will still be available.

That said, as you mentioned, your site address will use a WordPress.com subdomain (sitename.wordpress.com) and you won’t be able to use your custom domain with your site.
