transition from blog to website
-
I have a wordpress.com blog and I want to have a .com website, using the same content and design as I have right nog on my blog. So what I mean is that I want everything exactly as it is, but just the .com behind it (withoudt the wordpress).
What should I do? It’s no clear to me what exactly to do.The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

What you need is the domain mapping upgrade. This lets you have your blog with a “.com” extension without the “.wordpress” (or “.org”, “.co.uk”, etc).

That would be 18 dollars a year? And what do I get for 13 dollar option? They look the same to me..
-
Per year costs
Domain Registration $ 6.- – a domain name needs to be registered somewhere – WordPress.COM is a low cost registrar
Domain Mapping $ 13.- – required to make any domain name work
They are separate costs since not everyone registers their name here – I have a domain name that is not registered here but I use the domain mapping to make captnmike.com map to a base blog here

thanks, I’ll have a look..
I just hope I don’t lose my content if I sign up for http://www.amersfoortenik.com..
I’m afraid this will happen.. -
No content is ever lost when domain mapping. The content does not move. All that changes is the URLs – nothing else changes.
Domains – Important Notes Before Upgrading
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#important-notes-before-upgradingIn order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from. If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog and purchase a domain name by purchasing an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade for the blog.
See here if you do not own a domain http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/
See here for mapping an existing domain that you already own http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
See here for mapping a sub-domain (for a domain with an existing website) to your WordPress.com blog http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-subdomain/
Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades is where you do the primary blog set up knowing it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.
-
Follow these steps
1) Register the domain name – see the link way above for that
2) Map your domain name: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
3) then wait for the changes to reach the far corners of the internet – can take 24 to 72 hours due to caching issues but changes start after a few hours
all that happens is the name visitors see is changed to amersfoortenik.com.. – no content is changed or lost – you still work in the dashboard for /amersfoortenik.wordpress.com/ (if that is the blog you map to) – all stats stay, all followers stay, search engines are told you have a new address, but you still live in the same house / blog – you just add a second name for visitors to use

Thanks! Isn’t it amazing that someone in Western Europe can ask a question and gets answers right away from others in the US, on the other side of the world? I am amazed every day by this digital revolution that is going on..
My site is online now, everything went just fine! Thank you for all the support.
I live in The Netherlands and I am campaigning for a political office. My website’s name is Amersfoortenik.com which means: Amersfoort (the city I live in) and me. Just wanted to give you some background details. :-)
Again, thanks a lot for the support and good luck everyone back there!
