Transition from new to current blog theme

  • Unknown's avatar

Purchased a new theme but have some significant work to do on look and content before it’s ready to go live and I jettison my old one. How can I flesh out the new theme and keep my current blog theme running until I’m ready to publish the new one?

This is really a strategy question more than a technical one.

The main issues to consider would be: how much traffic do you have, and how long do you think it would take to get the site the way you wanted it to be.

If your site has relatively low-traffic, you might be able to get away with doing the transition late at night or on a day where you expect less traffic. If you read up on the support forum for your theme and learn its features and technical issues ahead of time, you might be able to deploy the new theme reasonably quickly when you do activate it.

Another option would be to temporarily set your blog to Private (Settings > Privacy), meaning no one who wasn’t logged in as a user on your site could see your site during the transition.

Hope this helps. Someone else may have other ideas for you as well.

Thanks Jackie. I was thinking that I could do all the back end page building work on my current template and then attempt the late night approach. I get about 15 or so views a day and have a total of 470+ followers so want to make it as smooth as possible.

I’ll go check out the support forums as you suggested.

    All the best.
