Transitioning from WP.com to WP.org
-
I have a wordpress.com blog. I pay $26 a year for a domain registration, domain mapping, and private registration. I am looking for more customization and I was led to believe that downloading the wordpress.org software and going with a private host could do that. I am so confused.
Because I have a wordpress.com site, when I try to log in with the info the private host (hostgator) has provided to me, it won’t let me in. The dashboard hasn’t changed and I am almost certain I have not installed wordpress.org. I have paid for my renewal with wordpress.com and I now have a host at 10 bucks a month as well. I am paying for things, but the two aren’t working in tandem to allow me to switch from wordpress.com to wordpress.org and still keep the work I have done on my site (www.dennisellsworth.com) in the system so I don’t have to rebuild the site entirely.
If you have any idea what I am talking about, please help me.
Thanks
Dennis

Hi Dennis, it looks like you were able to point your domain to your new host since posting this question. For reference, here is how to transfer your site from wordpress.com to wordpress.org: http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org
Let me know if you have any questions about exporting your content!
