Transitioning to New Website (CMS Made Simple to WordPress)
-
My school’s website was created for me using CMS Made Simple. The site is outdated and I’d like to create a new one using WordPress. How difficult is it to convert to the existing domain name once I develop a site that I’m happy with? Is there another way to go about this? I need my current website to stay up until I’m ready to go live with the new one.

I believe you need to be crystal clear on the differences between self-hosted wordpress.ORG software installs on paid hosting and wordpress.COM hosted blogs.
There is no FTP access https://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/ to any blogs hosted by WordPress.COM. There is no blogger installed plugin capability and we cannot use any themes except these themes https://wordpress.com/themes/
There is no template editing capability and limited CSS editing capability is only via an annually renewable upgrade. See here for details on purchasing the annually renewable Premium bundle http://store.wordpress.com/plans/premium/ that contains a custom design upgrade required for CSS editing: Custom design – Frequently Asked Questions
http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/#frequently-asked-questionseCommerce is not possible on a wordpress.COM hosted blog unless you have a Business upgrade for $299. per year in US funds. See here for all the details http://store.wordpress.com/plans/business/
https://en.support.wordpress.com/ecommerce/WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
As you are referring to a wordpress.ORG software install on paid hosting, if you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG account, then click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right-hand corner of the page that opens, https://wordpress.org/support/register.php so you can post to the support forums there.
