Trapped in "Could not fetch" limbo
-
Some years ago I looked at WordPress and created an account. Based on the “Epistablog” URL, I was thinking about moving one of my blogs over here, but I don’t know how far I got. Based on my experiences today, I suspect not far…
Earlier this morning I was able to log into the account, but the WordPress system is completely unusable when I do so. Therefore I’m now using a different browser and different ID (via the google) to keep it from logging in. From the logged in state on the other computer, all I see is “Could not fetch the next page of posts” messages. Can’t access the help there. Can’t even input my own data (which seems to be missing, apart from my mugshot).
I wanted to use WordPress for a writing course I’ll be teaching later this year, but I can’t inflict this sort of thing on my students, smart though they are. I use lots of writing tools, and used to consider myself a tool phreak, but right now I feel like the broken tool.

This WordPress.com account is only 25 minutes old. Could you share the address of the site you need help with and then perhaps a volunteer or member of staff could help or at least point you in the right direction. https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Tried again by going in via my old blog. Not sure if this is a helpful diagnostic, but at first I couldn’t enter a Title at all. Two or three attempts later I managed to enter a Title, but never managed to get it saved. It really feels like there is nothing to do but erase the entire mess and try to start over again…

If I understand your question, then epistablog.wordpress.com is the the blog that was created on the old account. I tried going in that way on the last round of struggles… Maybe the problem is that I’m thinking along the Blogger lines? That’s the only blog I’m still using these years, but don’t think it would be suitable for the class…
-
Not sure I should try to talk to @themagicrobot, but my latest theory is that the old account is just FUBAR and I should ignore it and start over from scratch…
However if the learning curve is this steep in my native language of English, I think that puts the kibosh on exposing my students to it. Most of them are native speakers of other languages. Even if WordPress has an alternative interface, the focus of the course is supposed to be on writing, not on struggling with the writing tools…
-
Two new observations, actually… Some of the comments here are coming from me under the old account, and some are coming from what is probably a new account that I’ve accidentally created this morning.
As regards the old account, I think it might be stuck in the “Loading” status. Something about the old data is breaking the fetch attempts. However at this point I’m pretty sure there isn’t much there, so I might as well abandon the old account and just try again from scratch under the new ID.

@shanen0 you should be able to access the site while logged into this account. Are you having trouble still?
It’s really not too bad as long as you don’t have multiple accounts leading to confusion:

OK. Actually I re-read your question; you’re getting the error when you log in with the correct account, right?
If you go here (while logged in as shanen0) do you see the error still?

Thank you for your efforts. I don’t have time to work on it right now, but I’ve pretty much decided to trash the old account and just switch to the new one. I think I should try to check the status of the old account for the sake of assessing the seriousness of the problem, but right now I’m just going to focus on doing some work on the new account to determine if it is a suitable tool for the writing course.

Okay. We’re happy to help if you’d like. For what it’s worth, I logged in as you and had no trouble, so it may be as simple as clearing your browser cache / trying another browser.

I appreciate your enthusiasm and the speed of your replies, but I still have no idea what was wrong… However now I’m a bit concerned that anyone, even someone I trust as much as you [Just joking?] was able to log in as me so quickly and apparently easily.
So… I have not cleared the cache nor changed browsers, but now there don’t seem to be any problems with that old blog. It seems to work as expected and I couldn’t provoke any of the “Could not fetch” errors in any of the places where they appeared before…
I think my highest concern right now is the help system itself. I already encountered a new problem with the new blog I created. Once again, I spent a long time searching in Support and in the Forums, but failed to find any solutions to the problem, or even explanations of why I shouldn’t worry. I’ve posted a new Topic question on that one…
If I understand things correctly, then I think I should log out of this identity and regard it as obsolete and not use it in the future. I should log in under the new identity and try to keep everything over there…

Since I’m giving up on this “Could not fetch” problem and just hoping it doesn’t come back, it seems that I should mark this topic as “resolved”, though the true status is more like “closed without resolution”.
In summary, the problem appeared and then went away. Near as I can tell, I did nothing to cause nor to solve the problem. I have a vague feeling that the old website had become “dormant” in some sense, and when I tried to wake it up, something became broken and then it was somehow fixed. My main concern is that staff member “supernovia” may have done something to fix it, in which case my solution of doing nothing won’t work for you. However what supernovia wrote suggests no manual actions on that side, so I’m guessing a maintenance daemon took care of it.
Therefore, based on my current extremely weak understanding, my suggestion if you encounter this “Could not fetch” problem is for you to do nothing, but just wait a day or two.

Feels like I spoke “resolved” too soon…
After encountering a mysterious “There was an error retrieving purchases” error message, I started reviewing things and discovered a WordPress tab with a long string of “Could not fetch the next page of posts” error messages. That tab is pointing at https://wordpress.com/, but I really have no idea what is going on there or what posts it thinks it was supposed to be displaying. There are 12 of those error messages along the right side of the display, and I’m guessing there are more that aren’t being displayed.
Frustrating and kind of tiring, so I think it’s time to take a break for now. It still might be nice if the error messages themselves included a link to their explanation or if searching in the Support and Forums areas would return links to the explanations. Right now I feel like the score is 40-love with me on the love side. Rather worse than it seems to be my serve.

Support staff is able to log in if it’s needed to help you resolve an issue. In this case I was hoping I’d be able to see errors in the JavaScript console, since they’d give me more clues. But I couldn’t see the same issue at all.
I understand you’re tired of troubleshooting, but if at some point you want to give it a go, maybe you could pull up the error console on your end and get a screenshot of anything that might be there? And you could upload it to your media library (which staff can also access) or to Snag.gy or a similar service and post the link here. Those errors will usually be much more technical but also more specific.
Anyway, let us know what you’d like to do; we’ll support however we can.
