Trash Along the Bus Stops By Jonthan Estrada

I didn’t pay much attention to my neighborhood when my mom drove me to school. Like most teenagers in high school, I never cared to look up at my surroundings unless I was snap chatting how fast I was going down the street.
Fast forward the next year: I am glad to say I know what my neighborhood looks like at any given point in the day. Taking the bus as part of my early morning routine forced me to observe my surroundings for the better and made me aware of the little things that go on as I walk toward the bus stop.
Walking toward the bus stop I’m greeted by a cold wind that blows a plastic bag across the street. Once I finally reach my bus stop, I’m welcomed by an odor of filth emitted by the trash laying on the street.
Everyone knows that, as a bus user, you are not allowed to have any food or drinks on board because it might damage the vehicle or effect a fellow passenger. Which means that those that are waiting for the bus must dispose any food items before they get on.
Around the La Puente area there are hardly any trash cans to obey this rule or sometimes there isn’t enough room inside the trash can to throw away your trash. This causes trash to either fly onto the street for everyone to see or hide inside the cracks of the sidewalk.
According to Toxics Action Center, “More and more of our everyday products contain toxic chemicals, such as mercury or PBDEs (flame retardant chemicals) that are being generated through the piles of trash.” This states that not only are you smelling the stench of trash, but you also risk exposure to these harmful pollutants if we don’t do anything about it.
A solution to resolve the trash along the bus stops is to call the local Maintenance Department and report all the trash that you witness throughout the day. Encourage your neighbors, and local businesses to make the call. The louder the voice, the bigger the breakthrough. Only through unity can we solve the problem, and sometimes the maintenance division needs reminders to pick up trash.
