Trashing comments changes order

Since the new “trash” system has been introduced, the trashing of comments can produced unwanted results.

In particular, if an old comment is trashed, but the replies to it are not trashed, then the replies are “re-linked” as the most recent comments in the post. Once this happens, all subsequent comments appear before these “re-linked” comments.

The comments therefore lose their chronological order.

What were the dates on those nested reply comments?

Have you got a link to where this has happened so we can look?

Sorry – but for the sake of my readers, I have tidied up the mess. However, I now have a better understanding of why I am deleting the original comments, but not the replies,

Before the days of Trash, when displaying the comments for a post (via the bubble comment), they used to appear in the post order – i.e. replies appeared linked to the original comment.

After the introduction of trash, the comments are in chronological order.

Thanks – I will contact support.

  • This can happen in several cases and is a bug from core WordPress that hasn’t been addressed yet. http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/8841

Sorry, but I don’t think this is the problem. New bugs have been introduced recently (IMO).

Using bubble comment (to trash comments for a single post), the commets no longer appear in the same order as the post. The comments no longer obey their nested behaviour. They are displayed in chronological order.

This means that it is no longer easy to trash comments which are threaded. This can leave threaded comments untrashed without a “parent”. They then appear completely out of order in the post – always appearing at the end of the comment list – even when new comments are made.

    Just to clarify.

I am not using the admin interface to reply to comments, so I am not creating threaded comments beyond the depth that my users have.

This is a new bug introduced at the same time as the Trash feature was introduced and I dont think it is covered by the bug report stated above.
