Trial cancel never cancelled
-
Hi WordPress,
My friend who is helping me get a website up and running mentioned WordPress, and on January 11, 2015 I signed up for a premium account on WordPress.com. He told me we were supposed to go with a self-hosted plan somewhere else and to cancel, and I put my cancellation in on January 18th, 2015.
I thought we were good to go, and my friend finally has time to help me with my site now, but we saw the domain I had previously registered when I signed up for my premium trial on WordPress.com was still in use. It turns out the Cancellation confirmation email sent when I cancelled back in January went to Spam, and I only tracked it down tonight, after we realized the domain had never been freed.
What is the best path forward? At this point I have not used my WordPress.com site at all, and my developer friend is adamant about setting up WordPress on our own hosting plan not on WordPress.com. Really wish I got the cancellation confirmation email back in January, or that there was some other notification letting me know.
Would really like to free my domain name up as soon as possible so if you are able to give me an indication also of how long that will take that would be really appreciated.
Thanks for your help,

Actually, you can just use the domain name on your new site by changing the nameservers. I would strongly suggest NOT cancelling it at all, because in a large number of cases squatters snap it up and you can’t get it back. Just change the nameservers to point to your new site, and remember to renew it annually.

Hi @amyjeanbarnett : I’ve contacted our Billing team to issue you a refund of $73 for your WordPress.com Premium plan. This is $99 minus the $26 value of the bundled domain, amyjeanbarnett.com. I’ll let you know when I hear back from them on confirmation of the refund.
As @raincoaster noted, you can use a domain registered through WordPress.com with another host by either updating its name servers or transferring it away completely. We have a guide to explain your options here:

Hope this helps! Please don’t hesitate to let us know if you have any questions around that.

To follow up: I’ve heard back from the Billing team and they’ve confirmed the $73 refund. Please note, it usually takes a few days for a refund to process and appear on a statement.
