  I am interested in purchasing the WordPress business plan as this will allow me to upload my own theme. The problem is I am unsure to what extent the theme I am interested in is customizable. Before I make a purchase, is there any way I can do a trial run to check that my site will work as intended?

  There is no trial for business plan. However, after purchasing a WordPress.com business plan you can always request for a refund if it does not suit your needs within 30 days of purchase.
