  Is there a way I can do a “test run” in creating a website using WordPress, before I commit to making a purchase?

  I already have a domain name with another website builder, but I don’t want to switch that to WordPress until I feel sure that WordPress is right for me.

  As I understand it, I have to select a domain name (or migrate one I have), before I can even start using WordPress. Is that correct?

  WordPress.com offers a free plan, that never expires, and you can create as many sites as you want in your account on the free plan.

  We do not offer free trials of our paid upgrade plans, but we offer a full refund if you find a plan that does not meet your needs as long as you cancel within 30 days.
