Tried to transfer domain name to Wix.com, but WordPress still owns it

  • Unknown's avatar

Last fall, I created a personal website through Wix.com and transferred the domain name ‘reesewmiller.com’ from my WordPress account to Wix. Within the last two months, I have been trying to update my website through Wix and the changes are not publishing. It sends an error saying that the ‘name server’ isn’t connected. I need to know how to transfer my domain name that I originally bought through WordPress (that is now ‘expired as of Jan 5, 2016) to my Wix account.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi @reesemiller, I can see you had a site redirect upgrade, and I’m guessing you had the domain pointed at Wix. But that isn’t quite the same thing as actually transferring the registration.

If the domain expired back in January, it would have been released some time ago. Were you able to register it again? I can see it brings up a website, but it’s possible someone else bought that name by now.

Thank you for getting back to us. We have reviewed your domain history and see that it is currently locked and cannot be transferred directly to us. In order to get your domain connected properly, we suggest updating your domain name servers to us.

Let’s piece this puzzle together so that we can find the best instructions on how to accomplish this.

Based on your previous correspondence and domain records it appears that we are dealing with 3 companies (GoDaddy, WordPress, and Wildwest Domains). It appears that WordPress is a reseller of Wildwest Domains and that’s why the who.is records list them. Your domain is currently connected to domaincontrol name servers which are the DNS records for GoDaddy connections.

It appears that overall your domain is still with WordPress > going through GoDaddy DNS managers > mapped to the Wix site incorrectly.

Since the domain cannot be transferred it is your decision if you would like the connection to be:

Domain registered at WordPress > connected to the Wix site directly through DNS
Domain registered at WordPress > connected to GoDaddy DNS > pointing properly to your Wix site
If we were to guess on our end why your site is currently going through GoDaddy it is likely that your site has a sub service hosted there such as business mailbox ((email visible only to moderators and staff))
If you are not aware of any involvement GoDaddy has with your domain, just follow the instructions here on WordPress to update your nameservers to NS2.WIXDNS.NET and NS3.WIXDNS.NET
If you need to keep GoDaddy because this may have jogged your memory of what sub service you have with them, follow the instructions here to get your domain pointed to them.

This is the message I got from WIX…..I tried to transfer but on my site there aren’t the options on the page where I go to manage domains to trasnfer…..it’s all really confusing but this may get us on the same page…. Thanks

  • Hi @reesemiller, to clarify, the domain reesewmiller.com was registered with us once but is not anymore. You allowed it to expire back in January, and I’ve confirmed now that it was re purchased since then.

    I see a website here:
    http://www.reesewmiller.com/

    Is it yours?

I see an old site that was here on our servers, and a new site:
    https://cloudup.com/csag7tv95Ix

    Are either of those correct?

Yes, that website is mine with the same domain name, just with wix, but there’s the connection issue and I’m trying to fix that

  • @reesemiller who did you buy the domain through most recently? It was with us, then someone (presumably you) bought it again after you let it expire.
You may have bought it through a different WWD reseller. It is no longer registered through us, though, so we can’t control its settings here.
