Trouble editing blog
-
Hi, Up until today I have had no trouble editing my blog, adding new material to pages etc. But today the editing button seems to have disappeared, and I cant get into my own website. Can you hep me with this, thanks
JanetThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

It appears the Edit option in the My Sites admin menu has been (bizarrely) removed.
To edit a post, it now appears you have to go to your posts list (e.g. via Blog Posts in the My Sites admin menu), locate the post you wish to edit there, and then use the edit option.
I’m hoping this move is by accident, rather than design, as it otherwise smacks of making WordPress even more inconvenient to use.

Hi Janet,
Are you still able to access your website admin pages from one or both of the links below?

https://songdynastymusic.wordpress.com/wp-admin/Let me know if those links get you back into your website.
If not, could you take a screenshot of what you see? That will help me get to the bottom of this for you.
Here’s more info on how to take a screenshot

Same issue. I have Pages I update frequently (a calendar, for instance). When I’m on the Page, I could click on My Sites and then click on Edit in the drop-down. But now Edit is gone. I have to go to Pages, find the Page and then click Edit there. Now a common task is two steps instead of one… Thanks.

The edit feature was recently removed from the My Sites menu.
Themes might have edit links or buttons at the top or bottom of that pages/posts. Some themes lack these, and are effectively limited to the even more tedious task peysworld described.
We’ve noted this deficiency before. As of yet, we haven’t heard a peep from WordPress on the issue.

Hi everyone, sorry about the delay.
We’ve been having ongoing internal discussions about how to balance the need to keep the admin bar as clean and consistent as possible while also making sure our users (and HEs) have access to the tools they need to do their best work.
For the moment, we are asking that you try using the edit links in your themes and see if after you’ve used it for awhile you still miss the drop-down edit option.
If you have a theme that doesn’t include an edit link on posts and pages, or if you don’t know where the edit link is on your posts and pages, we want to know that so we can get the theme updated and/or help you find the link.
I know this isn’t the answer that you were hoping for, so I understand your disappointment and frustration. Is there anything short of bringing the edit dropdown option back that will let you know we are listening to and considering your feedback?
-
I think it’s an odd thing to do, since editing is the main function I use for my blog! Please bring edit dropdown option back.

Keeping things “clean and consistent” is good. Removing commonly-used convenient access to frequently used options most assuredly isn’t.
Editing content is, as Janet613 states, a prime function of a blogging / writing tool – so to remove a quick and direct means of achieving that function and then asking people to rely on the vagaries of theme designs (themes are far from consistent in options and capabilities as it is – and as noted in comments here), is ludicrously silly.
With the number of recent changes that have been made to WordPress which make little or no sense other than “fixing what ain’t broke” tend to start one into wondering whether you folk are in fact pro-actively trying to drive people away from your platform.

Ironically, I had the Edit option on the menu through until earlier today – it was the fact it had vanished that drew me to the forums.
Sadly, as Galois states, the return isn’t (yet) for everyone – so whether it is propagating back out, or whether it’s being re-enabled for some, remains to be seen. I’m certainly hoping for the former.

I lost the edit function yesterday. It reappeared less than an hour ago.
I can’t for the life of me understand what they’re doing with these changes—beyond using us as unwilling beta testers. They’re like electricians trying to find a current by randomly pulling breakers, then sticking paper clips in every outlet.
It appears that WordPress’s programmers and upper echelon are completely out of touch with the users who comprise the backbone of the service.
If, and only if, they keep the features in the menu, then we’ve finally won a small victory.
Something tells me that they won’t be so flexible with the new notifications and UI.
-
Just to confirm, the edit link is returning to the menu for now while we re-think how to best create a consistent experience across WordPress.com while also making sure “must have” tools remain easily accessible.
The ultimate solution will be different than what we have now, and your feedback about why and how you use the edit option in the dropdown menu will help to inform the final design, so thanks again for taking the time to let us know what does and doesn’t work for you.
-
So much for the small victory.
If creating “a consistent experience across WordPress.com” means designing an interface that looks and functions the same way on mobile and computer browsers then stop. Just stop. They can’t.
What looks good on a 5″ screen is often dreadful on a laptop or desktop computer. The new dashboard with its scroll and click heavy designed is awful on larger screens, and far less efficient.
Microsoft learned this lesson the hard way with Metro.

Oh good, the edit function is back and I can get back to work! Thanks lizthefair, and please please keep it there.
