Trouble entering phone number to register Domain
-
I was trying to register a domain but your site will not accept my phone number it is a US cell phone I do not have a land line. I don’t know what the problem is.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

If I recall correctly WordPress.com wants you to add a +1 before your number if it’s a US number. Example: +14125555555.

Hi there,
It looks like you managed to get it working with @thatchris’s advice, but let me know if you still need any more help.
@thatchris
For future reference, there should also be a period between the country code and the number, so +1.5555555555 -
Actually that night I spoke to my Brother who is a tech support person. I explained my problem and he said you were probably expecting the number entered in the European format which is not the format used in the USA. I have never seen a phone number entered like that before. But once he explained it I was able to come home and enter it right.

That is the format required by our domain registrar, with a period between the country code and the number. I don’t think it’s particular to any country, but most domain registrars require it this way, in my experience.
-
It’s not particular to a specific country. It’s Europe which last I checked was several countries. In the US a phone number is typically formatted 1-(555)-555-5555 or at least that is how my first grade teacher said to write it. Maybe I’m just old.
-
In this case it has more to do with how computers read numbers. The system is programmed to recognise a specific format, and everyone uses that format, no matter where they are in the world. So language/writing conventions don’t apply in this case :)

Hmm strange my husband is a a computer programmer and he could not make sense of what format it wanted the number. He did make some comments about how the program to enter then number could be improved by making it so the numbers entered were automatically formatted to add the + and . with less than 10 lines of code though. So people would not be so confused.

Thanks for the feedback, both of you. We’re actually already working on this, but with domains it’s not as simple as just changing the user interface as anything we do needs to be compatible with our registrars as well. But we want to improve it as much as you want to.
