Trouble Finding Press It Feature

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I recently opened a blog on WordPress, but I’m used Blogger and its features. I want to be able to post interesting articles to my blog as I come across them, like what I do with Blogger’s Blog This (or Send to Blogger) feature. I’ve come to find out that on WordPress, the feature is called Press It. I followed these instructions from a forum response in November 2006, but I just can’t seem to find this Press It feature.

<That’s probably what they mean by Toolbar but you go have a Bookmarklet thingie that you can add to your browser’s favorites that helps you post. It’s called Press It and you can load it at the bottom of your Dashboard -> Write -> Write Post page.

    Hope this helps,
    -drmike >

    I also saw this response:

    <Blog This!

Go to the Write page and scroll down. You can right-click and add the link, or you can drag the link to your blogroll. It’s name will be your blog title.>

I don’t see the Press It – Yowzer! link anywhere. Please help me and Thanks!

    BTW: I use Firefox

It’s in the blue admin bar at the top of the page, on the right under Blog Info. I don’t think it’s still part of the dashboard anymore.

It’s at the top of your wordpress blog when you’re signed in, you’ll see it as “Press This”

    Thanks for the superfast replies!!

Still, under Blog Info I only see:
    Random Post
    Subscribe to blog
    Add to blogroll
    Report as spam
    Report as mature

And when I clicked on Press This, it opened up a new Write post.

What I’m looking for is when I’m reading an article that I like-let’s say from an online newspaper-how do I send it to my WordPress blog? Is there a Press It button/icon that I can put on my browser’s toolbar?

Sorry if I’m missing something that’s very obvious.

Yes, Press This opens a new Write page and includes (or used to) a link to the place you were just reading. The idea is that it gives you a headstart on a blog post about that thing. I believe it’s also a Firefox add-on you can put in your browser.

riraito, please stop posting your link as a signature. You may not have noticed, but you’re the only one who does it; it’s not considered proper form around here. Your username is already a link to your blog.

    Thanks for your responses, guys.

After much research and angst, I’ve come to find out that the “Press It” feature is on the download/install version of WordPress blogs (or WordPress.org).

I just created my blog using WordPress.com and that’s why I can’t find the javascript bookmarklet for “Press It.” Correct me if I’m wrong, but that’s the conclusion I got.

Here are some helpful resources on the “Press It” function (they’re from 2005-2006 so I hope they’re still in use.)

Also, I see that “Press This” and “Press It” serve 2 different purposes. “Press This” bookmarks the particular WordPress blog you’re looking at. “Press It” in your browser’s Bookmark tab allows you to send an article you like to your blog as a post.

    Thanks again.

Well, the Press This at WP.com for me takes me directly to the Write page. I guess the implication is that you’ll blog about that page, but it no longer puts a link in. It used to.

Actually, it used to be on one of the pages in the dashboard because I dragged it to the tool bar in my browser a long time ago. (I also have the Link This on the tool bar.) Both are the javascript versions.

Thanks so much for taking the time to help me, Vivian and Raincoaster.

Are your blogs hosted on a web hosting server? or were they created simply from WordPress.com?

Last night I went ahead and installed WordPress 2.5 onto my website’s host server. Still, there’s no “Press It” bookmarklet at the bottom of the Write Post page. I did some research again and found 2 comments on the topic: Lorelle’s blog noted above says that “Press It” was accidentally dropped from 2.5, but she expects it to return soon. In another forum response, the moderator said “Press It” was dropped from 2.5 and will return better than ever in 2.6.

They said the javascript bookmarklet from 2.3 should still work, but I don’t know where to put the script.

Update: I’ve since took raincoaster’s advice and installed a Firefox add-on, the one called “JustBlogIt.” I set it up, went to an article, clicked “JustBlogIt” and the article excerpt and link showed up in a pop up window of my blog–just like I wanted. But when I click on “Save Draft” or “Publish,” I get a WordPress Failure Notice – Your attempt to add this post has failed. Try again.

Any ideas on what I can do?

Most likely you guys are not having a problem because “Press It” came with your older version. Is there a problem with the newest version 2.5 of WordPress?

I thought using this feature was going to be something simple (not having to install or download anything on a server). To activate Blogger’s “Blog This” feature, all I needed to do was download Google’s Toolbar, and when I came across an article that I liked, click “Send to Blogger.”

I really don’t want to waste any more of your and my time on this, but I’m very curious as why I can’t access this “Press It” feature.

    Thanks,

See this detailed forum post on how to get your Press-It Bookmarklet back into your browser’s toolbar. Actually, if you didn’t remove it, it should still be there in your browser and still work. It only disappears from your browser if you take it away or do a serious upgrade of your browser’s software (or get a new computer, which I did recently :D ).

    The old version still works.

For those using the Press-It bookmarklet directly from the Write Post Panel and not dragging it up to the browser toolbar, reconsider. It’s meant to be clicked from the browser.

here’s the bookmarklet that I found:

    javascript:if(navigator.userAgent.indexOf(‘Safari’)%20%3E=%200)%7BQ=getSelection();%7Delse%7BQ=document.selection?document.selection.createRange().text:document.getSelection();%7Dlocation.href=’http://YOUR-BLOG-URL.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post-new.php?text=’+encodeURIComponent(Q)+’&popupurl=’+encodeURIComponent(location.href)+’&popuptitle=’+encodeURIComponent(document.title);
