Trouble fixing the header image on my blog

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve been using the Nishita them for 3 of my blogs and while I can use a rectangular image for the header in two of them, I cannot use a rectangular image in the third one. When clicking on header in the customization, it asks for a 50X50 pix image. I don’t find a way to use a rectangular image. Please help.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Which of your three sites is the one you are having trouble with?

Also, you might double check that you are in the Header section, not the site logo section. Those two things are easily confused.

Thanks for your reply. I only have trouble with the one on Animages.ca. See this link to understand what I mean: https://www.dropbox.com/s/kt30xhwa2acqtyt/2015-02-11_19-30-19.jpg?dl=0

    Hi there,

The problem is your site Animages.ca is not actually using the Nishita theme. It’s using a retired theme called Motion. If you switch the theme to the one your prefer things should start to work as expected.

Thanks. I hadn’t realized that. I wanted to test the Nishita theme, but didn’t find a way to test it without going live! And then I realized I couldn’t customize the site as I want. There is a thin white rim around each bloc of post that bothers me… I wish we could better customize our site with the Premium package… And can I go back to the previous theme without any change?

There is an option to do that if you go through the wp-admin interface. Here’s a direct link.

There is a thin white rim around each bloc of post that bothers me… I wish we could better customize our site with the Premium package.

We can remove that rim (and make all kinds of other changes to your site) using the CSS feature of the Premium upgrade. For example, here’s the code you need to remove the boarders around the site elements:

    #header-inner, #sidebar-inner, #sidebar-footer, .photo-inner, .photo-meta-inner, h2.photo-title a{
    	border: none;
    }

If you paste that in the CSS box of your customizer, the border will disappear.

You can learn more about how CSS works here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/css-basics/

I’m also happy to help with other small tweaks, so if anything else is bugging you about your current look let me know!

And can I go back to the previous theme without any change?

I’m not sure what you mean by this. Could you give me an example?

    Thanks for quick reply!

I’m not sure where to put that CSS code… I’ll need to reed about it first.

My last question concerned the possibility to go back to the previous theme since I didn’t have a chance to test the Nishita them for this blog before going live. Is there a history of changes in site appearance that would allow us to go back?

I see the borders are gone, so you must have found the CSS tab in the customizer.

Let me know if you have any more questions about that.

You can change back by going to the theme picker and re-choosing the older theme. Your customizations however aren’t saved so if you switch back, you’ll have to re-add any CSS changes you made.

If you switch your theme and intend to switch back, I recommend copying the contents of your CSS tool to a text document. That way if you switch back you can just copy it back into the window.

Let me know if you have any more questions about that.

Thanks again for your help. Is there a way I could keep this theme and make blocks (on which posts appear) semi-transparent as it was in the previous theme?

  • Unknown's avatar

You could double check in the CSS forum, but I don’t think that’s possible with your current theme. In order to have solid text over a transparent background you need to have two overlapping elements so you can change the background without changing the text. It looks to me like your current theme only has one content area so if we make your background transparent your text becomes transparent too.

    IMPORTANT !!

    Hi Liz…

I have an important issue with the portfolio: http://smallanimalultrasonography.com/portfolio/scil1/ (password scil1) that is no longer accessible. My students need to see it tonight… It was working fine a couple of days ago and I didn’t change anything… :(

    Thanks for helping !

  • Unknown's avatar

How is it failing for you?

When I checked the portfolio I was able to get it to open with the password.

Note: If you were copy/pasting the password you might have grabbed an extra character. that would cause the password to fail. . .

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks for your reply. I went back to the site later in the day and everything was back to normal. I assure you that nothing was changed. My students couldn’t access the site either, and then it was OK. ?!?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m glad it’s working again. Unfortunately, this kind of intermittent glitch is hard to track down.

Hopefully, it won’t happen again. If it does, try re-saving the page. If that doesn’t work, let me know.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks. I hope it won’t happen again in the middle of a class.

I have a new question, how can I embed a flash quiz (from Quiz Creator) in a WordPress page?

Thanks again for your help :-)

I have a new question, how can I embed a flash quiz (from Quiz Creator) in a WordPress page?

It looks like they do these embeds using iframes, which won’t work on a WordPress.com site.

My (brief) research indicated you could also send students a link to the quiz instead of embedding it in your site. Can you go that way instead?

  • Unknown's avatar

The problem is that I don’t know where to host the quiz.

  • Unknown's avatar

they don’t offer hosting? That seems strange to me. Is this the site you mean?
    https://www.onlinequizcreator.com/

  • Unknown's avatar

They, but a very high price…

  • Unknown's avatar

Could you contact their customer support to be sure? If you were to embed the quiz in a site using an iframe, they would still be hosting the quiz, so it doesn’t make sense to me that they would charge significantly more for connecting to the quiz via a link rather than embedding it in your site.
