Trouble formatting DePoMasthead theme

I chose DePoMasthead as a simple theme and began trying to populate it. My main purpose here, btw, is to have an informational site (sort of a classic website), NOT primarily for blogging exchanges.

What I likes about this theme is its 3-columnn structure + it’s very simple.

When I first began to set up the site, it had a couple tabs across the top (just below the title banner), e.g., About, RSS, & Archive.

3 panels appeared below. In the lower left panel was some starter text which turned out (as best I can determine) to be text from the About page. I went in and edited that text via Dashboard | Pages. and all was OK for now. When I then Clicked the About tab, a nice page appeared as I had set. (Still, it seemed strange to me that the same text was echoed in the lower left panel.)

I then discovered something about Front Pages and decided this was ideal for me. I went in and set a Front Page (via “static”) Settings|Reading according to this:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/

I called the static page “Home” (no Parent). I also created a 2nd page, as in the example (and in its attribute, I made Home its Parent).

What I did was consistent with what I saw in the embedded WordPress video.

    A couple of strange things:
    1) I can’t access (or even see) the 2nd page.
    2) The About tab disappeared!

My pages & their content are clearly accessible and viewable in Dashboard | Pages but I’m having trouble displaying them as I want.

What I ultimately wanted was to set up a few pages that led to access to other subordinate pages but that may have to come later.

I hope I have descried this well enough and that someone can please help me.

Well, since you brought it up, and completely for the hell of it, I did crate a custom menu last night. But like other things, I was never able to see anything that resembled it. Now I went back in and selected all pages (left hand panel) and chose to Add them to the menu. I then clicked Save and – this tine – I saw a series of tabs appearing across the top (where they were before): Home, 1st Page, 2nd Page, RSS, Archive. So I still wondered why these disappeared n the first place (back to my post above). So, again for the hell of it, I deleted my menu. (Echo: Menu successfully deleted.)

I went out to the webpage and see that the tabs are still there and functional as ever (click them and they display the page content).

So I scratch my head still.

If (via page attributes) I make Home the parent of 2nd Page, the 2nd Page tab disappeared. So my impression/interpretation is that if I click the Home tab, a 2nd Page tab (or something) would appear to access that page. But no – nothing like that is there on the Home page. Where did it go?

Aside from this, I guess I’m not sure of the functionality I would/should expect without a Menu, vs. what the Menu offers exclusively.

Volunteers cannot see into private blogs and examine them to determine what went wrong. Please see Changing the Order of Menu Items and Creating Sub-Menus to see if that assists you with your prolem. As there are many misconceptions and common mistakes bloggers make when creating custom menus I suggest you use the information at this link > http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2011/12/19/custom-menus/

Thanks for your comments, TimeThief. I have to do a lot more experimenting/troubleshooting to resolve this. If you were standing behind my chair, I’m sure you could resolve it in 3-4 minutes. In addition to the links you listed, I’ve discovered a few by Panos, e.g.,
    http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/03/24/header-page-tabs/

There’s a subtle interplay between the inherent Header Tabs that Panos describes, and the Menu functionality that’s possible for some themes (such as mine). I’m struggling to fully understand the difference between these two …

On that score, as I’m struggling to try things (including break things), your were spot on in steering me to the Kill Switch I was looking for (Settings|Privacy). That was indeed the ticket! Now maybe you can really appreciate why I so needed that switch <smile>.

    I hack away …
