Trouble getting merchant links and images to link correctly
-
I’m having LOTS of difficulty getting links to work on my blog. I’m in the beginning stages of creating the blog, wanted to test some links to mass merchants. Few, if any, are working.
I’m getting “page not found”, and/or “this webpage is not available” .
Most of the time, the product image is NOT showing up in the post section, or in the widget section. Sometimes, the widget area is “empty”, but I can hover my mouse over it, click, and then get to the merchant’s site.
I tested the same links on a separate, fledgling blog I have, and am getting the same errors.
I let a friend test the code on her blog, and it worked for her. Image showed, and once clicked, went to the merchant’s site.
I’m using the free Spacious theme, switched to it after trying the Customizr theme.
My one blog post, and several pictures, ARE visible, but not the links—except for one. (links to a product creator’s landing page, and that link is fine.)
I have three more concerns:
1. Somewhere on my blog, I have the statement, “if htaccess were enabled on your blog…..” , but I don’t know what to do with that information, how to enable it, what would happen if I did.
2. My one blog post is now showing on my Blog page AND Home page. I think I just want it on the Blog page.
3. When I begin to customize my theme, I’m taken to a page which, I assume, would allow the drag and drop features this theme (and many others) say they have. Mine has drop down menus on the left, but in the big space in the center-right, I’m ALWAYS prompted to re-log into my wordpress site as my session has expired. Even IF I re-sign in, the page almost immediately reverts back to the “please log in again” message. However, I can fill out the menus on the left side WITHOUT having to re-sign in, and the changes show in my blog. How do I fix this -re-sign up thing? At this point, the drag and drop would be nice, but not imperative. It’s just frustrating to have that message all the time.
I can supply Screen Saves of several of my concerns, if needed.
I’ve been fighting these issues for a month, so I need some help.
Thanks for responding.

First thing: Please identify the website you seek help with. You refer to pages, widgets, drop-down menus and other features, but we can not very well guess which website you are referring to. Is it a WordPress.com website, or perhaps a WordPress.org website?
I’m having LOTS of difficulty getting links to work on my blog.
How are you creating links on you blog?
Most of the time, the product image is NOT showing up in the post section, or in the widget section.
What product? What kind of widget? What displays in a post has nothing to do with what displays in a widget.
I have three more concerns:
1. Somewhere on my blog, I have the statement…
Can you provide the entire “statement” that you refer to please?
2. My one blog post is now showing on my Blog page AND Home page. I think I just want it on the Blog page.
You can set your front page to display a page instead of your latest posts at Settings > Reading.
3. I’m ALWAYS prompted to re-log into my wordpress site as my session has expired.

@musicdoc1, and others.
Thank you for responding. I went to sleep not long after I posted, then all day with family activities.
First, it is a wordpress.org blog, http://www.Christmasmorninggifts.com
(It is a very beginning blog, with lots of link tests and only one post. I wanted to make sure my links would work before I added more content.)There didn’t seem to be a way to enter my blog name in the default section last night when I began my post.
Now that I’m on the .com version of support, rather than the .org, should I find a .org support system, or will this one suffice? In any case, I’ll answer the questions you asked.
How are you creating links on you blog?
I am given product codes by various mass merchants, to promote their items as an affiliate. I copy them from their site, then (I’m supposed to be able to) paste them into my blog. I have the choices of (1) pasting them directly into a post, with no accompanying text or with text, or (2), pasting that code directly into a text widget on my sidebar. If I paste the code into a blank post, I can title the post (or not), save it, but not publish it. Then I can copy that text and place it into a text widget. This method can offer the option of creating a linked image, if I upload the right image.
What product? What kind of widget? What displays in a post has nothing to do with what displays in a widget.
The products are going to be various gift items: toys, women’s clothing and accessories, home decorations, gift ideas for all ages and genders. The widgets are text widgets, provided by the theme. I can use them to put in any html code, or images, or perhaps anything else I choose. I suppose you’re right, what is in a post doesn’t have to have anything to do with what is in the widget. But, as I said above, I can Use an unpublished post to create a linked image.
I gave my friend one of the product codes, she was able to insert it into her blog (not sure which way, maybe in a post), and it worked fine.
I don’t think I can insert a pic here, but if you go to my blog, and click on one of the links in the sidebar, you may see either the “Page Not Found”, or the “Webpage Not Available”. Some of the widget areas that look “blank”, actually have code embedded in them, and if you hover your mouse over them, you’ll go to the Merchant site. I think the “Melissa and Doug” links work that way. I think the link with the purse picture works, too, and that’s a linked image I created from that merchant’s site, but I’m not sure if the code I used is the exact code for that product.
You can set your front page to display a page instead of your latest posts at Settings > Reading.
I’ve read some of the help articles on the wordpress.com support area re creating a static page, and similar info from the theme support, and I’m still not sure how to choose.

http://en.support.wordpress.com/third-party-cookies/Thank you for that link—I didn’t know that option existed. Will it work for wordpress.org web pages? Could I just insert “wordpress.org” into that code?
However, I can fill out the menus on the left side WITHOUT having to re-sign in, and the changes show in my blog
Which menus are you referring to?
I can’t show you the page I see, as I don’t know how to insert an image in these responses. When I choose to edit different things on my theme, I click on “Appearance”, and “Customize” in the back office of the blog. A new page appears, with drop down editing menus in a column on the left, and a wide, mostly empty space on the right. I think that wide space is “supposed” to have drag and drop options, so I can see the changes I make, “live”. Instead, I’m only seeing a login dialog box to WordPress, insisting that I re-sign into my WordPress account. When I do–the page reverts to what I just saw, a request for me to re-log in. Catch 22!
Thanks for your help. Hope I answered your questions.
I need to figure out how to make those merchant links work—-it’s rather a key part of my blog! :)

We cannot help you. This is the support forum for WordPress.com.
You need to be at WordPress.ORG for assistance with your version of the software.

Thank you, raincoaster. I just now found my way back to the .org site. I’d enrolled there a few months ago, finally found my log-in info. Hoping I can get help there. Thanks to you and musicdoc1 for at least reading and responding a little. The link to the third party cookies took me on a tour of the wordpress.com support topics, and from there, to the .org. I appreciate both of you.
