Trouble importing a WXR file
-
Hi, after attempting to import a WXR file (moving a site for one WordPress to another) I get stuck with a message “Importing takes 15 minutes or a while longer if your site has a lot of media. You can safely navigate away from this page if you need to: we’ll send you a notification when it’s done.”
Then nothing happens for days. Presumably it doesn’t work and I can’t restart or cancel the procedure.
As I saw, other people had similar problems so let me just stress:
– my WXR file is smaller than 15 MB (10.7)
– I had cleared the browser cache and it didn’t help
– I had deleted all comments and other non essential things
– my WordPress installation and theme are all up to date
– however, my browser was a little outdated, so that might have been the problemSo I’m asking for help or advice on what else to do and I need mods to cancel the import process.
Thanks.

Hi there,
Are you trying to import the WXR file to a WordPress.com site or a self-hosted WordPress one?
If you’re using the self-hosted version of WordPress, you should ask over at the WordPress.org forums:

Looks like something is wrong with the format of your export file. I have reset the import on your WordPress.com site. Can you please try and export the file again and import it here:

If this doesn’t work or you have more questions, just let me know and I’ll be happy to help!

Yes, when I tried to export ‘All content’ the file kept ending up corrupted. However, exporting segments separately (‘Posts’, ‘Pages’, ‘Media’ etc.) worked without any problem. I was able in the end to import everything by segments and that’s what I would suggest to others with similar problem.
Thanks for the help.
