Trouble in changing name server — help!
-
I am all set to host my domain at on offsite installation of wordpress. When I change the name server for my primary custom domain in my wordpress.com blog, it says that it accepted my change, but when I exit the screen and come back in, the setting seems to have reverted back to using WordPress name servers. What do I do?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
Sorry for the trouble! Can you let me know what name servers you’re trying to enter?
Also, just to confirm, is this for your domain boschpharma-blog.com?
-
Hello. Thank you so much for the reply. I am at my wit’s end on this. I just need it to work. to be more specific, I have been thrilled with my online wordpress blog for nearly 5 years, but we made the decision with some other sister facilities to combine our blogs on an offsite installation hosted by a vendor of ours. I am very unfamiliar with how to make the redirect happen. We have meticulously recreated every aspect of our blog on the new offsite installation, including mimicking all URLs. All is set up to work perfectly, but I can’t get the domain to point to the offsite blog, as I indicated in my initial forum post. I want both domains that I purchased through wordpress (boschpharma-blog.com and boschpackagingpharmana-blog.com) to point to our new offsite installation at the name server srtoolpark18.toolpark.com. They are prepared on their end. Also, do I have to do anything with the DNS entries? I have no idea how to handle those or if I even have to. My intention is for my wordpress-purchased domains to point to the offsite blog now, and to make my current wordpress.com blog private. Please help… so frustrated with my inability to make this happen.

Hi there,
I’m very sorry for the frustration. I’m checking with our team now about this issue and will let you know as soon as I get an update from them about it.
Also, do I have to do anything with the DNS entries?
No, you don’t need to change anything except the name servers to point your domain at a new host. Once that change takes place, any other DNS records will be controlled by your new host instead of here at WordPress.com.
You may also want to consider transferring your domain name to your new host as part of this process. That will make it so you can renew the domain name there rather than having it registered here at WordPress.com and just pointed to your new host. In that case, you can use this guide: Transfer a Domain to Another Registrar

Hi there,
I confirmed with my team that srtoolpark18.toolpark.com is not a valid name server. Can you please ask your host what name servers you should use to point your domain to your new site?
-
I have an inquiry in to them, but I am really surprised to hear this. As they have noticed that my domain is not functioning correctly yet, they have repeatedly asked me to point to that server. I will be interested to hear what they say. Thanks for the help!

Hello. My host has replied, and they noted that srtoolpark18.toolpark.com is the web server the site is hosted on, but not a valid name server. He indicated I should use the name server gwa2.fe.bosch.de (103.4.124.215). However, my wordpress.com dashboard still creates the same issue. I make that entry in the custom name server field, it seems to accept it, but when I exit and come back in, it is once again set to wordpress name servers.

I think that I will need to clarify the situation with an internal IT contact before making any changes. Thanks for the ongoing support. I had better leave things the way they are for now…

Hi there,
I checked gwa2.fe.bosch.de and it’s a valid name server, so that should work for your site. If you’d like, I can work on this with my team to get your domain pointed there.
However, I’ll leave things as they are for now while you check with your internal IT contact. If you’d like any further help getting your domains pointed to your new host, please let me know!

Wow, you certainly are attentive. What a breath of fresh air! My IT contact is out until Monday…I would love to give it a try. Here’s my issue — not to expose you to the internal workings of our company… We have three blogs that are accessible through the same main blog site. My domain is for one of those sub-blogs. In other words, blog.boschpackaging.com is the main blog. If you visited there, you could click on a button that would take you to pharmablog.boschpackaging.com. My domain boschpharma-blog.com needs to point to pharmablog.boschpackaging.com. If you got my domain pointed to the valid name server, and they are not handling it correctly on their end, I suspect it will end up re-directing to the main blog at blog.boschpackaging.com, which would not be good. If that happened, would we be able to rollback to the wordpress name servers quickly? Right now we have duplicate blogs (the current online hosted version, and the one I am trying to point my domain to), but that’s better than pointing to the wrong place…

Hi,
Thanks for explaining the details — that helps me understand the factors that are involved here. The only thing about changing the name server if you’re not sure about it is that name server changes can take a while to propagate across the internet. In some cases, a name server change may take 72 hours to take effect everywhere. That means it could take 72 hours to see the initial change, and another 72 hours to see it change back if it doesn’t work as expected. (The change could happen quickly on our end; it could just take a while for everyone everywhere to see it.)
With that in mind, would you like me to go ahead and try to point your domain to that name server now? If you prefer to wait and check to make sure it’s being handled correctly on the other end, you’re welcome to get back in touch after you’ve had a chance to discuss it with your IT contact. Just let me know what you prefer!

Could we give it a try, and if at first sign of something amiss, I let you know, could we switch it back? That would be a reasonable approach, I think…
Worst case, would be if we switch it and then I realize there is a problem over the weekend, and can’t get support to switch it back until Monday…
-
Sure thing! I am making that name server change now — I’m heading into the end of my day (I’m located in the UK) but I will check in first thing tomorrow morning to see the status of the change. If for some reason the name server change doesn’t work as expected, I’ll get my team to work on it right away.
If you notice anything amiss over the weekend and need to switch it back, you can do that under Store > My Domains in your dashboard with the “Edit Domain” button. In the “Name Servers” section, you can choose “Use WordPress.com name servers” and save the changes to switch it back. You can also let me know and I will take a look as soon as I can.

Thanks a lot, but you should know that this bit of direction you gave me at the end does not work. It doesn’t save changes, even though it confirms the changes I make, when I go back in, the change is overwritten with the prior settings.

Hello. I have noticed that the domain URL is not yet functioning any differently. I know it can take 72 hours. Is there an update on what is happening? Has the name server been changed? Thanks a lot for the support!
-
Hi there,
We changed the name servers, but from my end it looks like the change isn’t working correctly. I’m concerned that things aren’t configured correctly on the other end for those name servers to work with your domains. (When I try to visit your domains, the browser is not able to load the sites.)
Would you like me to change those name servers back for you until you have a chance to talk with your IT contact?
-
Yes please. I will have some communication with them in the next few business days and see if we can fix whatever is happening. Thank you.
-
Sure thing. The name servers for both domains are pointed back to WordPress.com. If there’s anything more I can do to help just let me know!
-
Thank you very much. I will likely need to have the same name server change made next week when our internal house is in order…
-
Hi. Me again. My IT contact asked me to ask you what would happen if I stayed on the wordpress name servers, but made the DNS changes below myself. Would this successfully redirect my domain to the web server srtoolpark18.toolpark.com?
A boschpharma-blog.com -> remove
CNAME *.boschpharma-blog.com -> srtoolpark18.toolpark.com
CNAME boschpharma-blog.com -> srtoolpark18.toolpark.com
