Trouble in changing name server — help!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there,

Some DNS records can’t be deleted or changed while you’re using the WordPress.com name servers.

In particular, the A record for boschpharma-blog.com can’t be removed entirely, but it can be changed to point to a different IP address. Also, the CNAME record for *.boschpharma-blog.com can’t be deleted or changed.

However, it looks like srtoolpark18.toolpark.com points to the IP address 195.49.42.30. Can you ask your IT contact if we can change your domain records to the following instead?

    A boschpharma-blog.com -> 195.49.42.30

Alternately, you may find it easier to transfer your domain names to another domain registrar entirely and manage the domain records from there: Transfer a Domain to Another Registrar

    Hello.

It has been confirmed by my IT server contacts that the change suggested:

    A boschpharma-blog.com -> 195.49.42.30

is appropriate. Can this change be made, please?

  • Unknown's avatar

Sure thing. I just made that change from your site’s My Domains page, so it should take effect everywhere over the next 72 hours.

If there’s anything more I can do to help, please let me know.

    Thank you.

I was interested to see what you did, but I don’t see the change when I go in there…

To clarify, this will direct my domain to the srtoolpark18.toolpark.com web server, rather than my current online wordpress site, correct? Then my online wordpress site will only be accessible through the standard url of boschpackagingpharmana.wordpress.com? That’s what I want.

Also, you might note I have another secondary URL boschpackagingpharmana-blog.com. I need that to go the same web server as boschpharma-blog.com.

I am confused why I don’t see your changes in My Domains…

    Hi. One more question…

I have installed jetpack on my new blog, but how can I migrate subscribers? I have accumulated many subscribers over the years, and it would be really disappointing to lose them. There has to be a way to do this, right?

Hm, I’m not sure why you aren’t seeing the change. If you still don’t see it when you check it, could you please try clearing your browser’s cache? It’s possible you’re seeing an older, cached version of the page.

This directs your domain boschpharma-blog.com to the site on the srtoolpark18.toolpark.com server (the site at http://pharmablog.boschpackaging.com/ ). As long as that domain is the primary domain on your WordPress.com site, anyone who visits boschpackagingpharmana-blog.com or boschpackagingpharmana.wordpress.com will also be redirected to that site, and not your WordPress.com site.

If you’d prefer, you can make boschpackagingpharmana.wordpress.com the primary domain for your WordPress.com site. That way, visitors can access that site by going to boschpackagingpharmana.wordpress.com. (Right now, visitors can’t access that WordPress.com site because they are redirected to boschpharma-blog.com, which is pointed to your other site.)

Sure thing! We have a guide for migrating your subscribers to the new blog here: Moving Your Subscribers

If you’d like, I can do that for you. Once they are migrated, your email followers will continue to receive email updates, and your WordPress.com followers will continue to see your new posts in the Reader. If your WordPress.com followers would like to receive email updates, as well, they can subscribe via email on your new blog.

Please let me know if I can do anything more to help with that. :)

Sorry, I got antsy and submitted a request to have my e-mail subscribers moved through the jetpack support site. I shouldn’t have been so impatient. I have just been losing sleep over this migration…

I have another problem that is the most prominent one at this point. http://www.boschpharma-blog.com (with the www) doesn’t go anywhere. That’s a big problem. How do I fix that? I tried adding DNS entries for that, but I don’t really know what I’m doing. This is my last major hurdle I think. Thank you for all your help.

No need to apologize. :) Would you like me to go ahead and move your subscribers over now?

You can add a CNAME record for that, as described here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/setting-custom-a-records/#adding-www-to-your-domain

I checked your DNS records for boschpharma-blog.com and you’re all set with the record you added there. Like other domain changes, it may take a little time for that to start working everywhere.

Great — I did the CNAME correctly? The article you cited says I only have to enter “www,” and I entered “www.boschpharma-blog.com.” Is that still okay? Yes please do migrate my e-mail subscribers. That would be awesome. Very grateful for all the help!

  • Unknown's avatar

Yep! You can enter either “www” or “www.boschpharma-blog.com” and it will work the same way. :)

I moved your subscribers over to the new blog, so you’re all set with that.

I just wanted to say that you totally rock! You have unquestionably earned your title of “Happiness Engineer.” Thanks so much for all of your help!

You’re very welcome! Thanks for the kind words. :)

    Hi.

One more issue here… The www. cname entry is not working. It’s been 5 days, and http://www.boschpharma-blog.com doesn’t work…

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there,

The CNAME is set up and working from this end, so I’m not sure why it isn’t directing to your site. Can you please check with your IT contact to make sure your site supports the following CNAME record:

    CNAME http://www.boschpharma-blog.com alias of boschpharma-blog.com.

Please let me know what they say about that CNAME record.
