trouble linking

I have trouble linking on my blog. many times links don’t work. what to do?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Unknown's avatar

I am also unable to add links to blog entries. I have followed all the advice given by timethief in her post on 1 Mar 2012 such as clearing my browser and cookie cache, disabling my browser add-ons, etc, and it still doesn’t work. Can someone please address this issue for us? Thanks!

We can’t help you, wombat, if we don’t have your URL.

foreverlivingdream, we need to know exactly how you are linking, what links you are trying to add, what you are trying to add them to (anchor text or image), and what specific kind of failure you get when you try. Also, a link to a post where this is happening would be helpful. Also, your browser and version.

If you are using Windows 7, update. Several people reported this cleared up a raft of mysterious problems.

Sorry about the url, first time posting in these forums and I thought if you clicked on my Member icon you’d get me that way.

I am trying to place a link to a Web page in the “About” section of my blog:
    http://diaryofavagueamerican.wordpress.com/about/

specifically, the url at the bottom of the page linked to the title of the poem, “Barking.”

When I’m in the edit page function, I highlight the word and click the “insert/edit link” button as I have always done, but I don’t get a pop-up window letting me input an url and text. I am using Firefox 12.0, and I ran the latest round of Windows updates just last week.

Thanks for your prompt reply, and any further help.

That’s odd. I’m assuming you’ve done the Cookie Dance and you’re only highlighting regular text, not something in the title or anything?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, I have danced on my Cookies til they crunched.

I am highlighting the word Barking, which falls at the end of a sentence in the body of the text.

And I am not an Upgrade customer, so Obi-Wan, you’re my only hope, etc.

    Thanks for your help.

This is going to sound a bit weird, but it’s a long shot, who knows; it might work.

Go to the word Barking, and put your cursor between the B and the a. Backspace to delete the B, the space, and the D of the previous word. Then type it all in again by hand. See if that works.

    Aha! You suspected hidden code!

It was a good idea, but sorry, it didn’t work.

I am using Windows XP on an older Dell laptop, which recently had a complete meltdown. The husband (who does this for a living) deleted a bunch of Windows files in order to make sorely needed disk space. Although Windows says I am up to date, might I need to re-install XP for some reason?

I am having trouble with links as well. Specifically linking one post to another. I am working with cookbooks and recipes. In each post about a recipe I want to link to the post in which I discuss the cookbook it came from.

Also sometimes I want to link to another recipe. All of these are WordPress links e.g. http://recipegluadys.wordpress.com/2012/06/01/more-with-less-cookbook/ ‎ or http://recipegluadys.wordpress.com/2012/05/31/blueberry-and-vanilla-scones/

Yet I get a page not found error message when I click on the link.

Other links are working fine so I don’t know what the problem is.

  • Unknown's avatar

Those posts are dated June 1 and May 31, so of course you’re getting a not-found error.

    Justpi

I thought that might be the problem, but it doesn’t explain why some links in scheduled posts work and others don’t.

And now those posts are published and the problematic links still don’t work.

    Any other ideas?

  • Unknown's avatar

Links to posts which HAVE NOT YET BEEN PUBLISHED will not work.

    raincoaster

Some of the links were working even before the posts were published.

And now the scheduled posts have been published and the problematical links still are not working.

  • Unknown's avatar

They don’t retroactively start working. You cannot write a post that links to the future and publish it and expect those links to work once the future arrives. You can only ever link to posts which are live at the time you hit Publish or Edit. So now you can go back in and put those links in and they will work.

  • Unknown's avatar

I think you are confusing links to scheduled posts with links in scheduled posts. Please link to specific published posts in which the links aren’t working so we can see what’s wrong.

  • Unknown's avatar

I think justpi may have hit on the problem.

    I will try raincoaster’s idea.

just for reference, here is the post in which the links are not working:

    http://recipegluadys.wordpress.com/2012/06/01/pineapple-sauce/

At the time of my initial query, this was still scheduled to be posted in the future. The future has now arrived and it is now published.

The one link (to More-With-Less Cookbook) was to a post also scheduled for future publication. That post has also now been published.

The other (scones) was to a post that had already been published.

So both problematical links were in a scheduled post. One was to a scheduled post and one was to a published post.

What can you recommend for avoiding the problem in the future?

  • Unknown's avatar

Links in scheduled posts should be no problem, provide you’re careful with copypasting and typing. The URLs you wanted to link to are these:
    http://recipegluadys.wordpress.com/2012/06/01/more-with-less-cookbook/
    http://recipegluadys.wordpress.com/2012/05/31/blueberry-and-vanilla-scones/
Instead, you linked to these invalid URLs (because you pasted some extra characters after the URLs):
    http://recipegluadys.wordpress.com/2012/06/01/more-with-less-cookbook/%20%E2%80%8E
    http://recipegluadys.wordpress.com/2012/05/31/blueberry-and-vanilla-scones/%20%E2%80%8E

Switch the editor to HTML, locate these two:
    <a href="http://recipegluadys.wordpress.com/2012/06/01/more-with-less-cookbook/ ‎" target="_blank">More-with-Less Cookbook</a>
    I used this sauce on the<a href="http://recipegluadys.wordpress.com/2012/05/31/blueberry-and-vanilla-scones/ ‎" target="_blank"> scones</a> I made

and paste these in their place:
    <a href="http://recipegluadys.wordpress.com/2012/06/01/more-with-less-cookbook/" target="_blank">More-with-Less Cookbook</a>
    I used this sauce on the <a href="http://recipegluadys.wordpress.com/2012/05/31/blueberry-and-vanilla-scones/" target="_blank">scones</a> I made

Well the links work now. Thanks for the help.

I am still not certain why they did not work earlier because I could not find the extra characters in the link that justpi mentioned. In HTML they looked exactly like the links you recommended.

However, simply putting in the links again did work. And I will keep an eye out for extra characters in future.

  • Unknown's avatar

    You’re welcome.
“In HTML they looked exactly like the links you recommended.”
Not really: there was a space plus some invisible stuff between the URL and the closing quotation mark.
