Trouble logging into a website so that I can edit it

  I have supposedly been given access to the website for a company I work for. I’m their new marketing person, and the site owner provided me with access to edit the site. He told me this morning to log in using my email and he provided me with a lengthy password. I tried to log in using that email, and WordPress did not recognize that email. I’ve since created a basic user profile using my Google login. (That’s how I’m sending this help request) But I need to be able to access this website to do some editing. How do I link that site to this user account? or why didnt WordPress recognize my email when I first tried to log in??? This has been very frustrating to be honest. Any help you can provide would be useful.
